done my arc and know i've started mig

i've been playing with both arc & mig for some time really just trying to get the practice in,and some spare time i had at work 2day i've done a few practice lines and i'm quite proud of this

Not to bad at all but try, to do some straight line runs, this way you can concentrate on getting an even travel speed with the torch. top pic bottom bead notice the thinner bit of weld in the middle of the bead, thats where you sped up you travel speed slightly. Mig welding is nothing more than getting the torch the righ distance from the work piece and at the right angle, getting you travel speed right and keeping it constant, and presto you produce a neat weld. Try run some lines about 3 to 4 inches long and post pics of that

will try and do that 2morrow, the smaller runs were done with setting 1, and the thicker longer run were done with setting 2,might have been a bit over kill before i noticed the i heated the 2mm steel plate up (glowing orange), might have been a tad warm, i will get some more photos up soon.

nothing wrong with it glowing orange at least you know its burning in LOL. Thats the other thing with MIG if you use to much heat you will create distortion, not enough and you lack penetration, always takes a while to learn the machine when you get a new one.

right, back at work 2day and have done as requested a much longer line run measures 5" on setting 2

and the smaller ones 1x4.5" & 1x4" on power setting 1

well it doesnt look like if it was two piece welded together as a butt weld it would break so thats a good start, try to keep movement speed as constant as possible. what does the back look like, thats where you tell if your getting enough or to much penetration and that is control by power setting and torch travel speed

thanks darren that really helps before i finish work 2morrow i am going to try and get some big welds on probably an old bit of box or steel or whatever's in work shop and will put some picys up

Hi Mark, looks to me that your wire feed roles need Adjusting, or the contact tip is oval. Your welding is intermitent causing the stop/start. make sure you have the correct rollers inserted for the wire size your using, as well as the contact tip size, examine the linner for kinks etc.
leave the wire feed dial were it is, and turn up the voltage control step by step, you will see the weld bead flatten out. look for the toe of the weld to blend in with the parent metal. Ensure all the connection are tight and most of all make yourself comfortable, if your not comfortable you wont weld nothing. importantly enjoy yourself.
