DOM or CDS tube?

In the US quite a few tubular frames are made using "DOM" (drawn over mandrel) tubing, which is ERW that has been drawn over a mandrel during the production process, and improves the performance of the tube in comparison to ERW.

I wonder is CDS tube the same thing as DOM, and if not what are the differences? Finally if DOM is not the same as CDS is it available in the UK, and what are the prices like compared to CDS?

I think one of them is more accurate/consistent on dimensions but I cant remember which one it is. DOM and CDS thats is
I also think that the properties are pretty much similar..grade for grade

DOM = CEW, CDS = CFS. They're listing CDS (as drawn, CFS3 BK) seperatly but the info in that section only covers sizes. In the CEW and CFS sections there are pdfs covering tolerances, mechanicals and composition. I don't do much with steel these days but i would have thought DOM/CEW is still a fair bit cheaper than CDS

IIRC CDS begins life as a solid billet and is pierced by a mandrel and gradually drawn to size with the final drawing(s) being done 'cold'

Thanks.............DOM tubing seems worth looking at for motorcycle frame production. Cost is probably going to be less than CDS, but an awful lot of frames have been made out of ERW no problem at all.

CDS is a mechanical tube now referred to as CFS3 and covered by BS6323 Part4 1982. It is cold finished and available in various states.

CFS3 BK As Drawn
CFS3 GBK Annealed
CFS3 NBK Normalised



You can also get CFS360 BK, it's slightly softer, allowing greater bends
