DOL starter coil voltage

got a new dol starter for 400v 3 phase motor, just noticed the coil is 230v what difference will this make ?

you can still use it if you have a neutral in the starter box and alter the wiring to it or would need to be changed to a 415 volt coil

You can make it work, but it may be easier just to take it back and change it for a 415v coil. There is usually no provision for a neutral in a starter as the coil will be operating between phases. have you any pics of the starter, is it new? Wiring diagram?

Not provision for a neutral? It just connects to one side of the coil. What make is it I might have a coil

There's a neutral connection in the starter, but the feed to the lathe is only 3P+E, so it's back to plan A and wait a few days to get a Schneider DOL starter. This was supposed to be a quick way to get the lathe up and running - and it failed, didn't check coil voltage.

IIRC we have only 120 vac controls much anymore, and in Industry, limited to only 24 v at the pushbuttons.
Having said that, my electrician friend discovered a very old lighting contactor up in the ceiling that had a 600 vac coil.

Take a phase and neutral to give you 230v

230v control circuit safer than 400v

Unfortunately I would have had to rewire the lathe as it's 3P+E from the plug, I had the workshop wired 3P+N+E, but all my kit is wired 3P+E.
All up and running with new Schneider DOL starter, will ultimately fit the contactor and thermal overload inside, with electrical switches attached behind the original mechanical buttons. A job for next winter.

Runs very quietly now - contactor used to oscillate.
