We had a border collie that didn;'t want to learn - tried one of the collars - hopeless (I reckon her coat was too thick) But I thought the collars had been banned as too cruel?

You can get collars that just vibrate but an electric shock collar I would fit to the person that bought it THEN try it out.

Don't use one. They're cruel.
Wear one yourself and zap it every time you make a mistake and see what you think of the person holding the zapper.
Why not just fit a gate.

Exactly this. I tried it first and thought the batteries were flat, so tried it with new batteries, and then tried holding the collar with a wet hand...on a scale of 100 where a typical electric fence would be 100, I would estimate the "shock" was the equivalent of less than 10. It was chucked in the bin as useless.

I have mixed feelings about shock collars. I had a very aggressive GWP, wanted to kill any other dog it saw. It was getting to the stage I was taking him to the vets. One zap from a shock collar and the dog had a change of attitude towards other dogs. The shock collar saved his life. Would i use one to train a dog, no.

I did get my wife to zap me before I decided to use it on the dog, I can say that on full power it hurts

Not a fan of shock collars at all or gadgets matter. But have seem a plastic bottle with about 1/3 fill of pea gravel used to great effect. Shaking the bottle when the dogs looses focus.

There used to be a version that just puffs a bit of compressed air. Not painful, just something to grab their attention.

Ultimately that’s what you need, to get their attention and have them focus on you when needed. It’s part of training so I just use a whistle. As noted above a shaker also works, basically something that makes a noise they don’t hear all the time.

Just be consistent and keep at it. Don’t let it pass, not even once as that just reinforces in their mind that compliance is optional.

As for shock collars, yeah please don’t. It’s not humane and achieves nothing that you can’t get to with proper training.

She’ll do it free of charge to anyone!
We’d tried everything to change the dogs attitude. Shock collar was the last resort before having him PTS. It’s the only time I’ve use one

so would alot of other men out there would know better than that if there mrs had the button in there hand

any swear words buttin pressed
not doing your chores button pressed
not been fast enough button pressed
been naughty button pressed

its also dont let the kids get hold of it either they would have a birthday with it while the mrs sits there laughing
or her devious friends

though i still think your a chicken only trying it out a few times

My brother's mate had a spaniel that he'd tried everything with to train, and to stop continually barking.
He reluctantly borrowed a sound activated shock collar. Within a week, it had stopped the barking, and he never had to use it again. It achieved something months of other training had failed to even reduce.

I think the issue most people have with shock collars, is people using them without trying all other options first.

I think this is the most pertinent thing " without trying all other options first." You usually only get out what you put in. I am going to attach something with 240volts to this fekker if he doesn't knock it off, he is still at the "Biting Raptorsaurus Mode" stage and he is like bloody lightning.
