Need to purchase a hedge trimmer, brushless type, 18v but nothing fancy, easy one I thought

I have a combination of short and high hedges so for looking for a pole type that can be converted to a short one or vice versa.

I know its possible to use a pole trimmer on short hedges but would like an all in one.

Can't find any, am I doing my searches wrong, does such a tool exist?

I use a short hedge trimmer have done so for years but my ancient B&D is sadly kaput.

When trimming tall hedges I just used the ladder.

This time I thought get one you can convert from long to short, oh well I'll keep using a ladder.

Neighbour uses a DeWalt pole hedge trimmer for the high stuff and for the low stuff. Seems to have no problems using it that way.

I have both a short and long reach cordless trimmers and I prefer the long reach for most things, even short hedges.
It is a lot faster, easier to use and easier to get the surface level because you are further away from where you are cutting.
The only real use for the short one is shaping some round shrubs and bushes.

But be aware that a cordless trimmer will not have the cutting power of an electric or petrol trimmer.
IE it will not cut heavy branches.
I do the first cut of the year using a petrol stihl and then it's cordless the rest of the year.

I recently bought a Stihl HLA 56 pole hedge cutter, they can be had for around £220 with one AK20 battery & charger, that will give about 100 minutes cutting time.
It wont chew through thick branches like a petrol one but for most of us will be more than adequate. For me the agro of dealing with seldom used petrol machines that have been used with todays crappy ethanol based petrol had got too much.
The electric stihl has been used in mother in laws garden clearing brambles & trimming paths & did well.
If you are a profesional gardener who hammers his tools you might find it a bit too lightweight but provided you dont try & drive it like you would a petrol one its absolutely fine.

The Makita does, particually the UH006

All of my kit is now Makita XGT 40v. More power and the batteries are better, best outdoornpower tool batteries I think. (36v tabless 21700's, most are still using 18650 that weight a lot more)

Other professionals tell me the split shaft is less powerful than the Stihl petrol long reach, but nothing will convince me to go back to that noise. Its not far off for cutting ability, much much prefer it.


I recommend the Makita split shaft, its about £250 and £130-250 for the attachements, but it has decent power. The switch can be irritating as it can turn off excessively fast.

Makita outdoor kit earns you a free battery if bought and claimed for, before the end of Sept. I'll soon have 5 of the batteries.
You get ages out of each battery, except for strimming thick stuff, that appears to eat through them very fast.

That's a 40v tool, the op asked about 18v tools.

I've no doubt it will cut heavy stuff but then it has twice the power of the 18v stuff.

I have an 18v makita short hedge trimmer and it will not cut heavy stuff. If you try it has electronic overload protection that cuts off the motor as soon as the blade jams. Probably to protect the plastic drive gears inside it.

That being said it is a superb tool and so light to use, so quiet and easy on batteries.
