Does length matter!!!

Just got my old maypole welder up and running again,
done 24v wire feed mod replaced speed control with PWM also done a euro torch conversion.
Right the torch which came off was 3m long new one is 4m.
Will this effect the power out put from the welder. Got a reading of 4.4ohms resistance from the new one from end to contact tip and 4.6ohms from old one. Also earth clamp lead at the moment it is 10mm if I change it to 16mm will it make any diffrance to it. I have to change the earth lead as mine is showing poor continuity if I twist it under test.

If anything the lower resistance of the newer torch can only be an advantage. Likewise a thicker earth return.

Sounds like you need to zero out your meter. I bet you get about 4.2 ohms if you connect the meter leads together.

If it was truly 4.6 ohms, you would only be able to get about 5 amps out of it.

you are right just checked the meter 4.2 ohms when conected together will check torches again to night to see were ive gone wrong. As a guide any idea what I should be getting?
Then Ishould be able to see if I am measuring it right.

You should get almost no resistance, less than 0.1 ohms. You will need to subtract the resistance the meter gets when the leads are shorted.

Unless your meter has a real low resistance range, you can not really measure it well.

A longer torch will add some more drag, but 3m to 4m would not be that big a difference. I was surprised that my little Clarke ran a 5m torch with no problems.
