Does it have to be 10Kva

I have an esab rouge em180,now according to the spec i need a 10kva genny,really? For something that small?
10Kva gens are massive and costs fortunes,wheres 8's and 7's are far more cheap and portable,this has to go in and out of my van
Theres a guy i know running his rig(Stahlwerk 200 mig)at full tilt off a 6kva and has never had a problem(forgotten what genny now)
I just cant see how for mine i need such a monster of a genny

Are you going to run it at 11 ?
Seriously, if the nameplate max is 10kva, that's at the max. output.
(plus I think a wee bit of Kentucky windage thrown in).
Do you have an existing smaller genset you can do some real world testing with ?
Beg, borrow, or rent one for a day ?

The problem is ratings of modern generators. I had a Honda 3.3kva generator and it was powered by a gx390 engine. That same engine is now fitted to 6 and 7 kva genys. And 3kva generators are fitted with a little gx200.

I’ve got a thermal arc 175 and that states it needs a 10kva generator. I used to run it on a 4.5kva generator and it would power it burning a 2.5mm rod at around 80amps but the generator really didn’t like it, and really really didn’t like it on strike up.

They say 10kva to allow for running at max power and to handle the increase in startup current at the higher power of the welder.

you dont want to risk one too small, as any voltage fluctuations is pretty hard on even inverter welders, as voltage sags it will draw more current, and that starts heating things up and burns things out

11,you mean top setting?
90% of the time no,but there is that 10% i might
I'm a very long way from kentucky,so it'll have to be a strong wind
As for beg,borrow,i'd rather not,renting is still going costly just for a test

I fully understand that,i just cant get my head around the fact that this small unit needs a genny that big

Multiply the KVA by 2/3 to get the KW. Even then you might be overestimating it.

So the manual gives a lower number than the product page.

Ok. In that case 10KVA sounds about right. I always use the power factor.

I can't give any specific advice but I can tell you that a 200amp kemppi minarcmig runs pretty much flat out on a 6.5kva sgs petrol generator without any dramas.

i have a diesel 10kva genny, and my minarc mig 200, like you say, the genny doesnt even feel it at 200amp, but my minarc 180 stick welder will make the engine note change when you strike an arc, even at only 110amps
stick seems to be much more taxing on a genny!
