Hello people, as the title does anyone use AirPods in the workshop are there any issues.

When I was Working at the Herald printing newspapers we had 2 or 3 presses running so no one heard anyone coming till they touched you or came into view because of the noise we worked a 1/2 hour on and a 1/2 on break while running this changed my response to loud noises and not jumping to noise instead the eyes might close if it’s loud enough. I’ve had friends sneak up and pop the paper bag to see if I’ll flinch.

What potential issues are you envisaging? Earphones are no issue as long as you stay aware of what you're doing. Same as at any other point in time.

I never really got on with the fit of the in-ear type. They are ok if you are not doing much but anything active and they tend to dislodge and become uncomfortable (if they don't fall out). They can also get a bit sticky if you are doing anything that involves a bot of sweat.
They seem to work fine though so it might be worth spending the time to find better fitting rubbers or even custom fitted ones.
After a day in the workshop you do need to wipe off any.metal dust etc as it will soon build up in the charger and stop them charging properly.
I've switched to a pair of full-size ones now.
Far better battery life, have actual controls on them so you can change volume/things without reaching for the phone, work with more than one device at once and sound better.
The noise cancelling is also very good. Sometimes I'll just wear them for that with no music playing. They have a 'background' mode which will remove any sound of welder cooling fans or tumble dryers but still pass normal conversation through.

My wife uses air pods and loves them - in the workshop I’d guess they’re easier to use with safety glasses if you need them. I have a pair of Sony over ear wireless ones and wouldn’t change them for anything. Amazing sound and the noise cancelling is awesome. An advantage I could see in the workshop is other folk will know you’re wearing them - maybe they’d miss it with the air pods.

Never assume. I've tried wearing earphones at work which are as brightly coloured & vivid as you can get, yet folk still start talking to you. They even talk to me when I've got ear defenders on, & tools running.
Unless they carry the right EN number for hearing protection, then they aren't suited for protecting your hearing, regardless of your perceived feelings.

If you want hearing protection, buy the right stuff - my tinnitus tells me 24 hours every day I should have been wearing the proper gear right from the beginning of my career.

In the ball bearing plant I worked in, ear protection was a compulsory thing.
Only real problem was that when anyone needed to talk to anyone else they had to get right up next to you and shout in your lug'ole.
No wonder I called it Halitosis Hall.

Exactly the same scenario - unless the plant has upgrade to ear defenders with intercoms - although the first time I was given then was 20 yrs ago and the only place they worked was in reception . . where it wasn't exactly noisy.
It's dead good trying to shout in clear enough English/French/Spanish/Texan/Pacific NW to be understood enough and then to understand what is shouted back . . . currently the one I struggle with is Philipino-English.

I’m curious as to whether they will suffer from the environment. I do a lot of late shifts where I set aside welding projects for when the maintenance jobs run quiet. (Lots of tiging baskets for production wash machines and heat treat)
As well as how do they affect your hearing whilst grinding and as like

As a side note I don’t plan on useing these to replace ppe just to make long shifts more interesting, currently use a cheap pair of jbl over ear jobbies but these don’t work under my welding mask
I found grinding fine with headphones and woolly hat (was outside) though I use Samsung buds so they're in ear rather than airpods just hooking on your ear unless they're changed since that design.
Not as good as proper ppe but if you're only grinding for less than a couple minutes they're probably fine.
Just be careful with the "probably" . . .
Fro the net: It is considered reasonable to be exposed to an 85dB(A) sound for eight hours a day, five days a week. We can use what we know about levels to then translate this to other sound intensities, with each 3dB increase halving the acceptable exposure time. An 88dB(A) sound would thus be acceptable for four hours, and a 91dB(A) sound for two hours.
Angle grinder can be 115 dB
I make that 30 secs exposure a day.
I too was "only a minute or two" . . .
Irreparably bug gered my ears - just be careful you don't do yours. If you can hear a slight whistling, ringing when you stop and listen - the sound of an idling engine, generator a distance away, then unless you know it's an idling generator a small distance away, start paying attention. That was me maybe 15 yrs ago. Now it's a continual ringing whistling - seems to blend nicely with the oven alarm, sub-titles needed to make the TV listenable to . . .
