Do you whack it left or right

For some unknown reason my lathes tailstock chuck jaws have siezed and can't budge em.

Which way do I whack the chuck key clockwise or anti-clockwise? need to strip it down to see why its siezed,probably swarf or chippings lodged in there?

Hello Daniel,

are you talking about a standard drill chuck, if so, clockwise to tighten and anti to loosen. If you don't know already you need to press the outer sleeve down to dismantle the chuck, usually quite tight.

a gentle tap on the front of the jaws whist turning anti clockwise to allow them to go back into the chuck body, theres a few different types for dissmantling, a look should let you figure it out.

Did not work,can't keep a good grip on the tapered shaft,however with me trying my best a smallish screw fell out with the banging of the chuck key.

leave it in the tailstock ??? it is made for holding, it you wont get anything better. As far as which way to hit the chuck key, only you know where the jaws are, full in or out if fully in then hitting the end of the jaws wont work, it will only make it worse.

It sounds like he has fixed it?? If I read it correctly a smallish screw was stuck in the chuck?? Assuming the Smiley and happy days means its all fixed now??

The small screw could be the retaining screw locking the chuck onto the taper shaft.

Some do have a retaining screw. Don't think I ever saw one on a MT adapter but drill-mounted chucks commonly do.

i think a lot of portable tool chucks have the screw as well as the taper as people are riving them all over and get a lot of chatter and prone to coming loose where as the one in the pedestal drill or tailstock get a strait push

Many of the portable battery and elec drills now have a reverse, the retaining screw down inside the chuck jaws stops the chuck unscrewing off its spindle and could well be LH thread, -so clockwise to unscrew it.
( in case you need to remove a one)
I have always had success with a gentle tap on the chuck jaws and a turn of the chuck key at the same time, it helps them release. but dont go overboard knocking the living daylights out the chuck, mind you it may well not release a stuck screw that mysteriously found a winter hibernating place.

My corded drill have had that screw missing and was a pain coz a 5mm drill would fit in the thread screw its self in and be jammed solid, damaging the thread so that i couldnt put another screw in, but then worse any 4mm down drills would dissppear right up inside, when pushing hard.

I cheat and put a drop of threadlock on the L/H thread retaining bolt.

Never whack a chuck key Dan. You're just going to knack the teeth on the ring when it inevitably slips out.

Yes truly sorry, I knew what I meant, just didnt put it into words, so yes, L/H threaded retaining bolt down inside the chuck jaws, CLOCKWISE to remove it, Anti clockwise to tighten it up.
