I thought my wife was imagining things when she told me that she can turn the pedals on her bicycle but the bike wouldn't move if she was in first gear at the cassette. But on closer inspection it turns out that the cassette fastener had loosened up and the smallest gear gradually ate through the splines on the freehub until it could spin freely of the wheel. The splines on the freehub are shot. The wheels are half decent so I thought I'd try to save them.
I had to use one of these tools to get the freehub off. So it's not the regular type of freehub that uses a 10mm allen key to remove. Undoing it I found open bearings, 2 pawls, and some shims which appear to be for preloading the bearings.
I'm attaching pictures of the inside of the freehub. I've spent an hour Googling and can't find a freehub that has a fitting like this. But I thought I'd check if anyone recognises it so I can buy parts instead of having to junk the wheel.
