Do welding masks block UV-B

Hello everyone,

I should first say that I am not actually a welder, but am considering buying welding safety equipment in order to shield my eyes from a medical ultraviolet-B lamp. I have a skin condition on my face that needs to be irradiated every so often in order to disappear. I was hoping that some kind folks might be able to point me in the right direction.

The intensity of the UV-B rays coming from the lamp is about 60 times that of sunlight, so one minute of exposure is equivalent to an hour's worth of sunlight. Here are the mask prospects. It is important that they are eye cup design, so that more of the skin is irradiated.

I am wondering if anyone might know if these masks might provide complete protection from UV-B rays of that intensity. Or if any other similar masks might do so? I have tried contacting the amazon sellers, but with no luck.

I would have thought that proper goggles would be available from the manufacturers of the UV lamp.

Personally I wouldn't mess around where my eyesight is concerned.

Yes, that is true. I received protective goggles, but unfortunately they also cover a good bit of the area that needs treatment. Hence my looking for eye cup glasses.

That would be similar to those 'turbo' 2 minute tanning booths you get now wouldnt it? So would the goggles you wear for those not be suitable, the ones like swimming googles?

I wouldn't take a DIY approach to safety of your eyes tbh.

A decent pair of sunglasses will give adequate protection from UVA and UVB, that's what they are designed to do. Oxy acetylene goggles are only to protect from glare.

Thanks for all the replies. I do have suntan booth goggles, but they do not protect adequately from this lamp. I think I will buy some UV protective lacquer or try to write to some safety equipment manufacturers. Thanks again.

Do you need to see anything while being treated?, if not, why not use opaque goggles, maybe painted or taped?.
