As far as I am aware there is no legal obligation but if something goes wrong the impact on your life of a successful court case for damage or injury to a third party could be astronomical and in the modern world of looking for someone to blame and claim from makes it all the more essential to have.

I hope you will never need to claim or have a claim made against you but it is something you should have to protect yourself from the actions of others.

there is no legal obligation for anyone to have liability insurance, but just imagine setting fire to someones mint condition mk2 escort or golf gti that is insured with the likes of carol Nash. They would pull your pants down and aim for penetration, probably looking to end your business when they claim back costs, especially if its insured as a rare or classic. If you have liability insurance it all gets sorted painlessly just like any other policy. You have an excess and your premiums increase.

better u than me if u didnt get public liability insurance especialy for hot work .if your running a legit business the insurance and all expenses are tax deductible

Do you like having all the things you own?... house car money clothes... tools etc... If no then you don't need it. If yes then you really do.

Public liability is the absolute minimum you want... Ideally adding professional liability/contract works as well as your public liability won't cover a claim for "poor workmanship" or the like

One of the first things I bought when setting up on my own repairing computers. As people have already mentioned, only one thing needs to go wrong, someone sues you for damages etc and you are screwed if you don't have it. I visit people's homes picking up equipment or repairing it in house and I would hate for something stupid to happen, i.e. step on a pet that got under my feet and the vets fees could cost thousands... Just not worth the risk without it.

one of my missus mates is a plasterer and slipped off bottom rung of ladder few weeks ago, fell into the fireplace and broke mantle price. Luckily they accepted his offer of getting a mate round to fix it foc, but not everyone will. Ive worked in some expensive looking places that id be hesitant about if i didn't have insurance.

The implications of a small problems like damage from a few stray grinding sparks could be thousands sometimes.

I had to do some welding on a petrol station forecourt once... I had to have copies of all our insurances with me, and copies sent here there and everywhere before I could start

Just the legal costs involved in fighting any claim against you could be enough to put a small business out of business before the case even reached a Court, never mind the other costs (such as paying for damages, loss etc) which could soon equate to the value of an average home.

I don't like insurers as I tend to view them as being little better than the average thief and chances are you'll pay far more in premiums throughout your life than you'll ever get back (all kinds of insurance), however you can't sensibly operate without it.
