i can weld

Hi,
I've spent the last week tig welding 25mm diameter tube together.
All has been well until yesterday, when the mask kept 'flashing' off for a fraction of a second. I had a similar problem a few weeks ago. This, and darkening before i got my head close to the work to begin welding. I ended up moving to the bench behind me. I later discovered it was reacting to the overhead light reflecting off the bench where somebody had ground off where a jig had been tacked on. The 'flashing' stopped when i moved benches also. All of yesterday i was having problems seeing what i was doing and kept dipping my tip into the pool due to being blinded.
Today it was even worse. Average number of 'flashes' were about five times per half of the tube weld. Today I had a brainwave and popped out to the car and came back with my pair of RayBans which i wore under the helmet. These plus the 'off' shade meant i could still weld even when zapped when the mask failed.
It only cost me £28 from ebay. It is solar powered and less than two months old. The cover is a little dirty, but in case this was the problem i tried a weld without the cover. It made no difference. Stil got zapped in the eyes!
Is this sort of thing a common problem?
Anyone know what the cause might be?
Is it something i can tinker or do i send it back?
The problem i have is it is my only mask.
I work for an agency and i have to have my own equipment. At the moment i can't really afford to buy a replacement.
I'd like some advice please, before i open a can of whoopass on the ebay seller
Thanks
