Do I have Arc/Tig eye?

Ok I'm new to this game, but overall it's been going really well..

I ask, do I somehow, have Arc/Tig eye?

I've never struck a weld in anyway without wearing my new, Thanks for your review of True-FusionTM XDH1-200 Solar Powered Auto-Darkening Welding Helmet..

But after each use, my left eye and always my left eye has like a stye in it, and it weaps gunk.. Whilstb also red red colour and sore!.. Not very pleasant ...

Confused as to why I'm getting it and why always in the left eye...

Does it feel like you have sand in it ,could there be a reflection of the arc from a nearby surface?

Yes it feels like there is something under the lid like sand.. The only reflection I could be getting is from my bench which is a piece of mild steel 1.5mm sheet.. On top of my workbench..

The only other thing I've noticed is sometimes when I'm welding the screen goes bright green for a little bit then reverts back to auto dark.. But, you would expect both eyes to have an issue, yet it's always the left eye !

Yep that's arc-eye, if the mask is flashing you that's definitely the problem as for why only the left eye I can't answer that but we all have a more dominant eye like hands so might have something to do with that.

If I'd have known what I know now I'd have bought a better quality mask with plenty of screen adjustment.. This one only has high or low sens adj and fast or slow auto dark...

I have two masks.
Both are not yr cheap jobbies.
Although one flashes me from time to time.
That mask is now my mig welding mask lol

If I ever invest in a new mask. I will be making sure it has a minimum of four sencors

If yrs has two. It's very easy for one to be out of the arcs way of light and I think this is what causes them to flash

I have a cheap mask and it lives in the dark workshop hung on the c02 cylinder .... it is solar powered so if I don't use it for a bit it seems slow to react ...I stick it in the sun for a bit and the reaction time speeds up ... jeff...

I thought that the auto darkening masks still block all or most of the UV light when 'clear' so you are only exposed to an uncomfortably bright visible light should they not darken due to fault or insufficient sensitivity. I would be looking to eliminate reflections from around the workshop, as Pete says above.

You won't get flashed through a helmet even if it doesn't darken. The lenses cut out any ultraviolet light which is what essentially sunburns your eye (what a flash is) most clear face shields or safety glasses will prevent flash. Its most likely being reflected off something most likely the bench.

The only time i've found the fast/slow function useful is if a fork lift is working near me cos the orange warning strobe on them can trigger the mask any other time stick it on fast and ignore it. Sensitivity control I adjust so if I look up at daylight or a bright bulb it doesn't darken.

its maybe UV bouncing off summat and going under your mask hitting your eye-could be your glove or sleeve of your jacket. Try taping some material or cardboard to the bottom of the faceshield-maybe its not a good fit at the base or somthing like that??

UV can't penetrate the lens, even clear perspex blocks enough to prevent arc eye as ootf says. Go to the doctor or optician as it looks like you are sensitive and welding is aggravating it. Get some amber tint safety glasses and try them under your mask, I have a pair and they don't hinder and may help. Arc eye eases in a couple of days so leave it alone then try again.

May sound stupid, but a (cold) wet teabag on the eye helps soothe it.

I have been trying to get into the habit of wearing safety specs all the time when working and I go with what pedro sez, you do not really notice them under the mask after a short while.Then when you go to grind/drill or belt summat wi hammer after welding yr eyes are covered.

I've probably got the (dis)advantage of having to wear glasses all the time so just put my prescription safety specs on when going to the workshop.

You could try wearing a (flameproof) scarf or turn up your collars or something to block any light coming into the helmet from below and reflecting into your eye. As said above, the lens blocks UV whether it's dark or not, so it's not UV passing through there that's causing the issue.

You might just have sensitive eyes, mine seem to dry out after doing some welding and I'm not using a cheap mask. I've got light blue eyes and I'm definitely more sensitive to brightness than say my girlfriend with dark brown eyes.

go to the hospital and get it looked at it might well be grinding dust, sand under the eyelid sounds like arc eye though you need it looking at. Robotstar5 is bang on the money with the cold wet teabag (no milk) for either. you don't want grinding dust in your eye too long it gets harder to sort by the day

I have to say when auto darkening first came out the whole of the welding bay was empty the next day, we were on small stich welds and the rep thought they might be ideal - they were not! I use one exclusively now but back then I never used anything but a split screen and never got arc eye once through it
