DIY Stud Welder Slide hammer

Question for the clever bods out there

would it be possible to use a little arc welder modded up to an old slide hammer to produce something like this?

It looks like a copper tip would that be right?

My guess (could be wrong!) is that it'd have to be very low current - or a medium sort of current for a very brief period (milliseconds).

Check out the amps. I looked into this a little bit before. There is a how to online somewhere of a guy using an alternator and solenoid powered momentary switch to so the same thing

I've often thought you could use a TIG set for this. Holding the pin in the collet. A quick press of the button, or set the micro tack up if the set has it.

Shox that's what i was thinking, i've got a little Rehmann DC tig box that does TIG & MMA so was thinking i could just make an adapter for the end of the slide hammer and connect it up

Hooking the hammer to MMA/TIG box. Most of the dent pullers and stud welders I have seen use very high amps

I thought that they charged up a bank of capacitors, then discharged them through the stud, so you only need a relatively low current source at perhaps 50v or so with a wacking great bank of caps, and the final contact closure is the stud itself touching the bodywork

I've done similar by miging nails or washers to dents and using a normal slide hammer or vise grips to pull.

I've used/maintained the Tucker studwelders, both hand and robot guns had an autofeeder. The studs had a "pip" on the end that made contact, the stud was withdrawn fractionally drawing an arc and forming the weldpool, then the stud was pushed into the pool.
