diy help with emmersion heater please

last night the imersion heater didnt come on

is it possible for me the diy check that the element has indeed blown before pulling it all apart etc

any pointers please

Disconnect it completely and run a continuity test with a multimeter. Check live to neutral and across the actual element, if the first is bad and the 2nd good it's most likely the thermostat that's stuck open. Check across the thermostat to confirm.

thanks , the cap says its combined stat so i assume i can only replace the whole thing anyway

Not worth messing about, if they don't work replacement is the obvious course unless it's a fuse or trip.

With it disconnected have a look inside, the stat is usually inside a tube which extends into the water, this is so you can remove it without draining the tank.

the old one states 11" , should i just get another 11" or would bigger be an upgrade ?

do i need any jollop for around the gasket /threads...i have ptfe tape

quite often for the stat/probe to fail strangely enough they are a 5 min job to swap I hope you are lucky

sealant for the whole unit , if it needs it

right both posts on the element "beep" with the multimeter

and both beep on the stat m but the stat contacts look burnt..so would it be that ?

did u remove the wires before checking for continuity

yes i did

cut and clean the burnts bits and try again possibly it was arcing due to loose connections

its not the wiring conections burnt , it has a contact like inside a relay or ign points

clean the contacts and give it a bash
or get a new one for £5

They should come with a large washer or gasket, no need to seal the threads.

not sure i trust myself to find out lol

ive stuck a new stat in it and see how that goes overnight , its on the ecomony 7 leccy with a another top up one that still works mounting in the upper section

Assuming that the tank is full of cold water and that the thermostat is cold you would expect continuity across the thermostat, if it was above the DHW temperature set the thermostat should be open circuit.
