DIY fuel filter fix

Assume you have sorted this by now... but just come across this in the workshopView attachment 369503View attachment 369504

I did actually buy a similar replacement filter, but the big problem is there is not enough room under the existing filter. Its only got 5-6mm to play with. I could make some more space by removing the foot but the problem with that it is likely to cause problems with the fuel gauge float and tank empty mechanism that live in the alloy tube. Thanks for the thought though.

as julianf said, remove the filter and fit an inline one outside of the tank

There is not a huge amount of space to play with. See pic.

The large pipe top right is the from from the tank, leading to the pump, it then goes through a u-bend into the Filter then out of the filter and into the the steel fuel pipe leading to the front of the car.

It is a very good idea however and I may well give it a go if all else fails.

Even after I had really flattened it, it would still catch at the heel as I tried to manoeuvre it into the tank. In the end I just took it off. As you can see the sock fits the tube quite well so I went with that as a short term solution. Truthfully I'm not sure that I didnt rip the sock manoeuvring it in. Quite why they made the opening so tight is beyond comprehension, Other E28 models using larger engines had an in tank pump, together with the external pump and the tank opening was a bit larger. It may have been, because this style of tank may have been used on the earlier E12, so BMW just went with what they had at the time.

Anyway I've bought some nylon mesh from a very nice gentleman in China and some gasoline proof glue from a dood in the USA, so in the the next month of two, of maybe sooner I'll have a go at fixing what I've got and if that fails I'll have a crack at using an external filter.

I will update this topic as and when.
