DIY filtration, anyone

I want to ring up some filtration so I'm after DIY type ideas anyone's cobbled up.

It's the thinners smell mainly that I'm after reducing, though I do want to take out and capture overspray mist as well. Mist particles must be relatively easy vs thinners vapour, particle size etc.
I'm not after paintbooth levels of perfection, won't be calculating airflow and volume and all that.

Anyone rigged anything up?

i have a 12" extractor fan and made a flange to go to a 4m length of 12" ally concertina type ducting. On the other end (which i sit outside) is another flange which is connected to a 12" wooden frame containing a piece of boothe filter matting. Not tried it but suspect loft insulation will do the same job cheaper but if im doing just a small amount, i spray a hose pipe fitted with wide fan nozzle into the ducting.

That sounds nice and simple Nick, how does it do on killing the smell? The hose - cunning... water to catch particles?

My idea was a meaty car fan or maybe a pair, ducted out into an inner cylinder (OK a plastic bin...) with lots of holes in. That sits inside a bigger placcy bin with fewer holes, and between them is something fluffy and hopefully cheap to catch everything. Don't know if that would work or is too complicated..

The booths at the factory I worked in used a water curtain with an extractor behind it. You might be able to rig something up on a smaller scale like a pond pump with a fancy nozzle on top and some piping.

Not convinced you will ever get DIY smell killer but either of mine will significantly reduce. I think you will be dissapointed with 12v no matter how many multiples mate, i tried and failed as it moves the air about rather than pushing it out. Add to that a filtration system and you will end up with more of a vortex. Do a save on the bay and look for a second hand unit. i paid about £80 for mine as i recall. Clears a double garage in 3-4 minutes and comes in handy after curry night with the lads!! ill have a look for an identical unit on the bay.

Thanks Pedro, interesting but that's out because of where my place is would be difficult to rig up.

Nick I'll surf about. My mate has 2x car fans which work fairly well in his small place, I have one, it's slow but does clear the fug eventually. Though it struggles with the wrong wind direction. A pokier fan is no prob though, 80 squid sounds good.
I'm not after total killing the smell, just to reduce it as good as poss balancing cash limits & bodgery vs perfection (the first two will win out). Although we're not close to neighbours I'm sure they cop some smell esp with summer coming and open windows etc,

There are two desirable effects from creating a spray booth, one is the elimination of dust the other is the filtration of air to the outside.

If you have an airtight garage, which most don't, then there is little issue.

If you don't have an airtight garage then the best way maybe to create positive pressure into the garage via a big fan and dust filter. Then you can create an outlet for most of the air via a smaller fan and filtration system using water, charcoal etc. to try to minimise smells. Try to seal as many other exits as possible to minimse escaping fumes.

If I had a garage big enough to spray in this is what I would attempt to rig up.

I can't do positive pressure at my place but cheers, all thoughts welcome. The extraction side I'm not really worried about, it's really a workable and pref simple filter setup I'm after.

Was going to put the pipe & filter (whatever it becomes) outside, but might see about putting it up in the loft space. Have to arm wrestle the spiders and floor it out but could be pretty neat.

dunno how risky normal fan motors would be with fumes ...sposed to be spark free /brushless? motors

I have read that, but I've been using the car fan for several years as has my pro mate, his pair. It makes sense but wonder what the risk level really is. The light switches are supposed to be a certain type too?

yes in a proper booth /mixing room everything is spark proof and it costs stupid amounts

im not one for namby pamby health n saftey rules but a thinners explosion would be pretty nasty if it happend

Yeah that's what I mean Steve, sounds nasty, what's the chances vs the cost etc. Praps we do need to test it out - anyone got an old tent?

where are you doing this? purpose made area or something to put up now n then?

a positive pressure might be safer as the fan would be on the clean air side

It's a brick single garage, I'm after a permanent setup. Got a fair number of things lined up so the smell and filter idea's popped back into the ol' brain cell.
Depending on how much grief I get from the other half, there's room to put filter stuff outside of it. Or there's loft space that could be sorted out. It's leaky all over, crappy doors etc, positive pressure would be lots of work I think.
