We are still unmetered and live between King George IV and Staines reservoirs so wouldn't need to go down too far and strike water! I worked for a pump hire company a few years back as the service engineer and contractors were replacing a couple of the valves on King George IV reservoir. They hired a de-watering plant off us to remove the localised water around the valve areas before excavating and it wouldn't touch the quantity of water in the area, each time the excavator pulled a bucket load out the hole filled up almost instantly with water! A second bigger plant was set up around the first and took best part of two weeks to drain the area sufficiently to dig out around the valves, even then the hole had to have two diesel pumps running constantly to keep the guys dry and a safety spotter watching the water level in case a pump failed. When I serviced the de-watering plant it was amazing how quick such a large hole started to fill with ground water.
