Discovery of doom TD5 duff battery?

So the Discovery 2 TD5 had a new battery last November but its now getting difficult to start, before starting the battery has about 12 volts but on trying to start it drops right off, a quick jump from another small battery gets it going and its generally ok for the rest of the day so am I right in thinking the "new" battery is kaput? unfortunately I don't have a drop tester
Once started its charging at about 16 volts which seems high?
Earths to engine block and else where have been tested and good
Its had a starter at some point before we got it so im assuming rightly or wrongly that's ok
Looks like I may have to talk to Tanya and see how good their warranty is?

Am I missing anything??

You're right,16 volts is high. 14.5 (ish is more typical. The high charging voltage may have killed the battery, but definitely worth getting the charging side checked out.

Mine used to fire up instantly, it did snap the alternator bracket when the fan belt tensioner went though

Highest charge I've ever seen was 15v in a Caddy with a "smart" alternator, Disco never went above 14.5

My Disco 2 TD5 was self discharging if left for several days - I found out that my farm gate alarm was on the same frequency as the body module and was waking it up regularly thoughout the day ! (it takes a remarkably long time for these electronic modules to retun to sleep - ie low current mode)

Bit more poking around but I ordered an alternator and belt, I'll see what the battery thinks of that once it's all fitted

Sorry to be the doomsayer but the battery is unlikely to be happy after being over charged (they are also known to explode in those situations) so probably need to factor in a new battery too.

Have you still got ACE fitted? Only ask as when I had a td5 I had alternator issues pretty persistently until 1 day the ACE system leaked, ran dry and set the pump on fire which I luckily caught in time, but after bypassing the pump with a shorter belt the alternator was fine. I still have no idea why but mine used to kill batteries until that point.

I just put it down to the green oval on the front...

The last time I had an alternator overcharge at that sort of voltage it cooked the battery big time. The clue was the alarming bulge that appeared in the side of the battery.

Yep still got the ACE, the ram is self lubricating externally at present...

Im hoping the thing will burst into flames and turn into a pile of ash so fixing is no longer required

Let the ACE reservoir run dry...fire will be spontaneous
