Disco 3 slipping auto box

Fairly high mileage, belongs to a mate. I haven’t had a chance to look at it, or scan whatever codes the GAPIID will find, not being unlocked for that vehicle.

He’s saying at steady speed, the revs increase like the box is slipping. Tranny has been flushed.

Initial guess is failing torque converter, but any suggestions welcome on how to proceed. I realise I should have taken a better history, but was distracted at the time.

It will be the Torque convertor - do you have a scan tool - where you can "lock it" to prove?

My raise is changing the manifold mounted CAT on a Skoda the other day. Difficult access and first time fired up found that it was blowing at head flange - 4 hours wasted ! Just spent another 1.5 hours today removing the new CAT and on examination mounting flange suspect so might be a return for replacement case. This is my normal quality of luck so nothing new.

They tend to have harsh changes if under or over filled, slippage can be the TC or if it's not had many transmission oil changes, the clutch packs in the auto 'box. You can lock up the TC by putting it in 'sport' mode.
I have once, and only once, seen a transfer box cause the same symptoms due to the clutch pack being entirely worn out after 300k of towing since new...

I assume it is. Was flushed properly, apparently.

50p says it is the linkage pivot on the side of the box seized up, this then prevents it going fully into gear, can be seen/sprayed up from underneath by looking over the top of the gearbox plastic under tray, do not go underneath unless you have a stand or block of wood.

GAP IID will still read every system on the other car, you just cannot programme etc.
Used to read my mates RR all the time.

Put it in sports / command shift or even sand mode, if the behaviour changes, then likely TC (not as bad a job as @premmington suggests, he just lacks LR fortitude ) if it behaves roughly the same, then likely transmission internals.
The gear selector cable issue usually gives a stiff selector movement, It's on the N/S

The photos above looks like a 6HP28 - the 6HP26 doesn't have the grey emergency release cable.

Pretty sure the D3 linkage is on the offside.
Quite common for the seizing linkage not to be noticed by the driver until the thing fails to engage fully.

Assume it's meant to use Lifeguard 6 or equivalent...was the correct fluid used?

Oh... I do mate...

I don't take LR jobs on in the workshop now - every job I take on - goes wrong as the vehicle has/always more than one thing wrong with it... (as a rule).

@Ubique - I am as anti LR product as a self employed vehicle repairer can be...

Dr tranny shudder fix worked on mine and it had been contaminated with coolant. New independent cooler, shudder fix and 20lrs flushed through and a new filter hood as new.
