When Hattersley Heaton Valves Had a Factory near me they used to used something like that back in the 80's to "drill out Valve flanges.

I recall on a School trip watching them friction weld valve bodies.

I was lucky enough to visit them before they closed the place and it was turned into a retail park. I was allowed to have a go at both machining methods.
Left an impression on a teenager.

So was his point that if you drill a hole and then let bit cool the next time you use it it will fail or was it because he just went too big a bit to use for that purpose in that size steel?

What kind of drill press do you need for that ?

Something seriously heavy duty with a lot of pressure ?

We have this kit at work 'Flowdrilling'. We use it to drill/tap fixing holes in relatively thin wall stainless steel to receive fixings for glass lugs etc.
We use the kit on a heavy radial arm drill - you need to spin the bit very fast and use power feed to force the bit into the metal. Its a bit of a brutal procedure, but works well.

I would have thought that if the metal was that thin it would tend to buckle with the force. He was using box so at least he had the support inbuilt but on flat or angle it must be tricky.

I think that on flat or angle you would just add a nut on the back of a normal hole.

The big upside to this is the depth of material to tap on tubes you cant get to the inside of.

I have just designed a air distribution manifold using flow drilling as the method to form the threaded hole to screw in a low pressure ball valve.
Works a treat but I believe the tooling is expensive.

The kit is about 1800 quid so not beyond the reach of most fabricators. The drilling machine if you don't already have one is a good few grand mind.

Most of my drills do that especially if i have been at it trying to sharpen it i do succeed some times but the drill would be 1" 1/2 long by the time i had finished

It was the drill press/machine that I was told was the big bucks we have had to find someone who already have the capability as non of are usual fabricators wanted to touch it as they had no experience

saw that vid the other day, he said they're cheap on ebay so I thought I'd get one just to try out... £60... which I guess is cheap for what it is but don;t really want to spend that with no use for it :-o
