Dimples in paintwork?

Any idea what this problem is with my paintwork? It's like solid dimples in the paintwork, when I took my car to the bodywork shop they told me it's micro blistering and that it would cost a few thousand pounds to sort out the two front wings.
I think they are having a laugh

If you're determined to rectify it you could try wet-sanding, first with 1500 grit followed up using 2000 grit then machine polishing. Makes friends with someone with a Paint Thickness gauge before starting.

However, if those are blisters under the paint [difficult to tell from the pic] you'll be stuffed, but then having tried the foregoing you're no worse off.....

Have they recently appeared?
Has it been recently painted?
Were they already on there when you bought the car?
Can you not do a test 'pick' on one or two of the blisters to see if it is in fact a blister or whether it's just a solid lump in the paint where someone just applied it badly?

It looks like thick paint blobbed on. If it's under a coat of lacquer you will be taking the lot off to cure it and if the car is not worth a lot of money or of sentimental value I would live with it. The adhesive pin stripes will have to be re-done as well and I think the shop was just trying to put you off because they didn't want the job.

That's what I'm thinking too, it just looks a bit like a 'matt' finish which suggests a crap spray job.
It definitely sounds like they don't want the work.

These marks have been there since I purchased the car around two years ago they are not getting any worse. Tried the pin test and they appear to be solid, the dimples are very small around 1-2mm. I've added another picture.

I have just had a new bonnet fitted by the bodyshop and they were supposed to have sprayed the front wings at the same time to get the correct colour match to the new bonnet. But they decided not to paint the wings because of these marks so I'm disappointed that they have only done half of the job.

Hard to imagine how it would be possible to spray that badly... short of putting sand in the paint... Microblisters from damp don't look quite like that I think. As said you could try flat & polish, unless it's cleared. But expect to recoat or possibly strip further.

Don't really blame the shop, they'd want an OK in case it had to be stripped further than just flatting the top. Say if it was solvent fighting out, the paint'd be weakened, and sanding probably make little pits.

Rubbish/dirty gun or paint not thinned correctly would probably cause it.
Microblisters normally occur on decent looking finishes, not rough ones like that.

Don't thin the paint enough, turn the volume knob up then hold the gun too far away. It's amazing what you can achieve when you try really hard.

They look like microblistering to me. Do they feel soft if you squish them with a finger nail? If so it's been sprayed without a moisture trap in the spray line. I did that once. In cellulose they deflate in the summer and the trick is regular waxing to seal the surface (stops them re-inflating). Probably drying out, sanding back a lot, then respraying properly would sort it. Ideally back to bare metal.

Otherwise could be overspray from anti-stone chip primer. That's easily rectified - sand until flat and respray.

Woz microblistering can occur anytime, rough or smooth, that's nothing to do with it. It's about moisture being trapped. Seen blistering a few times but not as dense and as rough looking as that. Usually quite smooth little blisters or pimples, sometimes opened up like mini volcanoes...

but would u take it on with orange peel like thatits like someone doing a crap rewire and askin me to put it rite [ YES SIR ]il sort it for u and il even give u a cetificate for it as well [not ]

in that last picture it reminds me of overspray from using stonechip and schutz gun

It might be a hightech method of reducing wind resistance (like the dimples in golf balls)

Thats definatly microblisting if i ever saw it,and that is quite a bad case, if you pop them the metal underneath will rust if you leave them it won't rust, but will look a bit dodgy. and if you sand them out take it to primer/bare metal coat and start again or ot will only come again and again.

Malcolm made a good point- they do look like anti stone chip primer specks to me as well.
