And as for the potential to be prosecuted on the off-chance your computer might be 'receiving' television, well if I or you were to search the internet hard enough I bet we could 'receive' some underage porn, should they not be prosecuting us all on the off-chance that we're all perverts?

A tv of any kind is grist to the tv licensing man's mill. But you need to let him see it, and as you don't have to let him see it, the whole issue should be academic.

Nevertheless, if said tv can't receive digital tv signals and there's no analogue available, it's not a tv anymore, so again, no problem.

Why though would you buy a tv when a monitor would do?

A curious thing - see iplayer on your computer - If you watch BBC programmes on it, live, you need a license. If you wait until they're downloadable, or watchagainable, you don't.

I think the terms are " capable of recieving a signal " . I'm betting there is nowt about what sort of signal , after all you could have a free view box and then see the TV ..same with a free view box and an infra red device retransmitting the signal to the TV .

I deffo ring the Post Offfice licencing from somewhere other than my home and ask the questions . It's nice to sleep with both eyes closed .

Can you buy a flat screen thats not digital?

You need a licence to receive a signal not to own a telly. The detector van detects a signal not a telly. Im told that they cant 100% detect a signal unless you have an outdoor aerial (but it might be an old wives tale).

The licence is for equipment capable of recieving a " TRANSMITTED SIGNAL "

Yes you can still get analogue flat screen sets second hand or off freecycle .
I have just been given an old Bush 32 inch CRT flat screen , it's masssive and took two beefy guys to put it in the car and set it up when we got it back home .
It is preset for analogue signals so we have to put it into AV2 mode and use the sky box .

It's a right palaver getting it to bring up the sky but it's a stop gap till we get a brand new big LED one later this year ( hopefully ).

I'd also be very wary of putting on an internet site that I was flouting the law , for the authorities do have the powerr to ask the site owner for your details etc ..
