@Arc Tourist has a couple installed.
At first, I thought they were plug and play VFDs with bells and whistles removed, but note the following from the seller’s description:
-They can be powered on without no motor connected.
-If you do this, the supply passes straight through to the output, no third leg.
-Third leg is generated only when powering a motor, and everything is balanced only under decent loading.
-“No high frequency” suggests no solid-state switching.
-They must be matched exactly to the motor, no headroom.
Output is apparently pure sine.
Sounds like a static phase converter?

Does anybody have experience with a "myung youn" Digital phase shifter, it keeps popping up in my searches. Seams to good to be true.

Since it has been nearly a year since this Very Fine Discussion is Verifiably Finished, Defunct, may I throw in another acronym? DPS -in this context, a digital phase shifter (although I shudder to think what the IFI crew will make of THIS one.) Myung Youn sells these through Amazon. I don't know...
