I only heard about the plan to introduce Digital IDs through alternative media as I don't watch the propaganda (MSM).

I'm just wondering how many of you in general know that they are planning this and that they are doing a public consultation at the minute which is due to end in 1 week.

Of course they are being sold as innocent and for our convenience and safety but it gives the government a great opportunity for even tighter control of freedom and provides hackers and fraudsters with easier access to all our data.

There's loads of talk about 'digital currency' too, and how the govt are restricting it to £20k limit in ones 'digital wallet'.

How exactly does that differ from money in the bank, which doesn't even exist?

I hear all the good stuff from one of my tin foil friends, who is anti everything that normal society accepts, everything.

The digital currency is an interesting one. The only way I can see that it will differ from today is that it can be programmed to allow certain transactions and block certain transactions. Pocket money for children in theory could only be spent on healthy food instead of sweeties. If it goes down that road, we are in deep trouble as a society.

Plus Rishi's daddy in law is the owner of Infosys, who are big in the digital banking world so you can guess who will get the job of developing the currency system.

Depends how far it goes. You couple a digital id with the 15 and 20 min cities and suddenly your a potential prisoner to your locality. Obviously anpr systems are good at recognising vehicles, but link it with facial recognition and modern ai systems to a totally digital system and you could easily be restricted in movement.

If used responsibly by all a digital system shouldn’t pose any drawbacks and make it easier for individuals to manage, however it is all to easy to impose certain restrictions and suddenly if you do something you shouldn’t your spending and access privileges are halted or heavily restricted. Nobody likes change but it’s difficult to see a happy ending…

I read about it this morning on the BBC with both Blair and Hague calling for it. Why am I suspicious when two political has beens from opposite sides of the chamber are in agreement? Why such a short consultation period? Having said that I'm not against it if it's managed correctly, but I'm doubtful.

I just heard about this last week, didn't know there was a consultation about it - it sounded like it had already been decided. Maybe it has and the consultation is just a formality?

Before this scheme, all of the reports I've seen have said postal voting is where almost all fraud happens.
It makes no sense to introduce a major anti-fraud system which ignores (fraudulent) postal votes and only applies to the almost-no-fraud "in person" voting.

If anyone is opposed to the digital IDs, Big Brother Watch have drafted up a template which can be tweaked to personalize your response. I haven't looked at it yet but should make giving an opinion on it easier as there is so much jargon to go through without any help.

I was well behaved earlier and reworded my post to remove any politics - I think this is an important topic that has had no publicity.

It would be a shame if it got locked because some posts included (well justified) thoughts that are not allowed on this forum.

I agree, it's a topic that will affect everyone eventually. I didn't start it to offend anyone, just to raise awareness of a very important decision being made on our behalf, one that I am against.

To be honest it's hard work discussing some topics without mentioning Political issues.
I got a couple of posts deleted that were merely links to YouTube videos.
Quite why I don't know because no one was discussing anything so my guess is it will be impossible to discuss this topic without getting

I'm not sure what the issue is. This is a solution to give people better access to their digital records so that we can use services online. The existing gov ID solution has issues, it's a bit of a mess, it doesn't follow the latest digital ID standards, causes data and security issues.

And you think a new system is going to be more secure?? It's actually getting easier to clone details that are held on "secure servers" than it's ever been. I have a paper card in my wallet that contains my details, think of the old paper driving licence and only myself and DVLA have that info, it can't be hacked,copied or cloned unless your fingers are in my pocket or DVLA give my details away, Now going digital opens up billions of gateways for my info to be copied so how does that make my personal details safer. Call me an old sceptical fool but sometimes technology takes a step backwards regarding making our lives better.

Why is it that anything really important is labelled 'political' and we can't talk about it? Voltaire said, "If you want to know who rules you, look at who you are not allowed to criticise." As for digital ID and digital currency, no matter how convenient it seems, it is far more convenient for those who seek to control us than any convenience it it affords us.

Many government services are verifying your ID in relatively insecure methods by today's standards, making it easy to falsify your identity. That's what I had in mind.

We are already digital. Government departments already have a single view of us, and we already have dozens of digital identities with varying security. The current Gov digital ID is stopping further progress due to it's architectural issues.

which is my point really...why do we need more. I have learnt a very valuable lesson over the last 5 years in this country of ours, anything that is rolled out for the benefit of the people is the exact opposite and only benefits the ones making the rules. We really need to wake up as a collective and think hard about the consequences of being steered in to pens "for our good"
If we stay clear of politics on this thread then maybe a healthy discussion might evolve.

I work in IT, which is why I'm passionate about this. I get presented problems and asked to draw up a solution. Digital IDs are central to most services and the one we have just isn't very good. I want a better one so that I can come up with better solutions and not have to fudge things. That's my narrow view
