Digger ripper tooth

Here is the latest hare brained scheme. I am going to cut up this digger bucket to make a ripper tooth for cutting small tree roots, because I cannot justify spending £500 on a new one for the limited use it will have. I am going to cut most of the bucket away, leaving just the centre part and the bucket web as the tooth.

However, the mounting pin holes are too small at 25mm. They need to be opened out to 30mm. Any ideas on the best way to do this ? I could buy a 30mm drill, but its a bit large for a normal size pillar drill. I also do not know if the pin holes have been hardened somehow, but I doubt it.

Mag drill if it will fit. With a rotor broach. Or just open it up with a die grinder, will be worn anyway!

I made one from scratch was easier than cutting a bucket up for me anyway

Well I need one for a job i have in a neighbours garden and i have a bit area of concrete to break up so I thought i'd push it to almost the top of current projects im not attempting to finish rescued a bit of 1" plate from the scrap skip when my friend moved yards Gave me a chance to test...

Just weld one on, then cut it off when your done, then you've still got a bucket ?

yeah a mag drill would do it you could weld a plate on to accommodate it but getting both sides to line up tricky bit

If you have a gas axe and a lathe just cut out enough to weld in some 30mm bushes made on the lathe

Open up holes with oxyacetylene. weld bushes onto outside with new pin size.

no strength left in that bucket once you cut sides away.

Proper rippers are made from Hardox or Strenx/RQT/Bisalloy

Agreed proper rippers are made of hardened steel but for this application its not needed , ive ripped up loads of concrete, roots etc with mine now and its hardly worn at all but its not regular use

if you really want to use the bucket and keep the strength id use the 2 end plates and weld them together with a gap at the back edge so it is a shallow v and weld a thin strip top to bottom to make it less likely to flex

cut out the section where the mounting is then you could clamp it in a milling machine if you have one to open up the holes

All depends what equipment you have or could borrow really , having cut quite a few buckets up now you want a plasma or gas axe otherwise its gonna be a pain
