Different metal thickness

Would it be ok to use different thickness of metal to do a rapair.

What i mean is would 1mm steel be ok to fix a hole in 0.8mm car body work.

Or is that out of the question?

Shouldn't be a problem just bias the heat / pool onto the thicker steel.

No problems with it that way. You wouldnt want to go thinner though.
A lot of people will use thicker than the original, as its easier to weld.
