i only know this as i had a part made for my ducati 996r from 7000 series billet,
it refures to the tensile strength of the alli 7000 being really high 3/4000 being lower, so i would say that it depends what you are applying the object you are making to but it would be best to mach the correct series alli

Sorry but that's not even close to correct. If you read the thread wheresmejumper linked to i posted a link to http://www.esabna.com/us/en/education/knowledge/qa/How-to-Avoid-Cracking-in-Aluminum-Alloys.cfm which explains further... cliff notes are that the numbering system refers to different groups of aluminium alloys not strength (the 2xxx series includes some of the hardest/strongest flavours along with 7xxx, specifically 2024 and 7075) and it's relatively rare to use a matching filler wire with many of the alloys due to solidifcation cracking

im sorry i dont know all the ins and outs, but tensile strenth is most definatly a part of it i dont claim to know anything about welding, refure to the last gentlmans web page i did not look into the 2xxx series

Some grades are not recommended for welding as they crack, 7xxx and 2xxx series but not all of them.
