depends how bad the oil oil is and if it really needs flushing or you're just doing it as part of a service
bought a van once, a week later I took the sump plug out and no oil came out.... checked the dip stick and it was fine... slowly the oil started to ooze out like snot (it was hot)
left it for about an hour to drain, filled it with red diesel (instead of oil) ran it for a few min and drained... did the next few changes pretty quick too, was about 100 miles, 500 then 1000... (well that's what I aimed for, life gets i the way!)
if you're just doing a normal service with no problems then I wouldn't bother... if you think it needs something extra just change the oil early a few times..... apparently modern diesel oil doesn't have the same cleaning properties as the old stuff... but if you're being hit by hot oil flying off moving parts at 2000rpm you'll clean up pretty quickly ?
why would u want to loosen and flush crap through all the bearings in an engine if its stuck there not harming anything leave well alone just regular oil changes if your so concerned
I would have thought if they were that bad they were worn out anyway. I had a Moggy van like that once poor thing had done a huge amount of miles & in the winter starting it was a lottery, I learnt that if you went out 10 minutes before you were due to leave in the morning & turned it over it wouldnt start & the battery would appear to die. Leave it ten minutes & give it another go & it would start first time. Once winter set in you had to start it once an hour without fail or it would refuse to go at all. Its last trip home from work its big ends were rattling like a good un & clouds of blue smoke were pouring from it. It died on the driveway & in the morning there was a bigger puddle of oil under it than usual. I think it was beyond a diesel flush.
so first off get some cheap diesel oil empty out your old hotish oil then use the cheap oil get it hot and let it flush round the system for a day if you like then drain again and put some proper stuff in what you may find is that cheap oil is thick black crap when it comes out
just make sure the engine is hot enough to drain the oil out well
Using a cheap oil is actually a good idea, and mabey a better idea for me. I have the dreaded 1.6 HDI DV6 engine knowing me I'll do a deisel engine flush to help keep things clean and I'll block an oil gallery.
if it was something of mine i would drop the sump and rocker cover off and degrease them , then run the cheapest oil and filters for a few hundred and keep changing them until its clean
the flushing agents only tend to be used on neglected stuff so the stories about it blowing up engines etc , they was probably going to grenade soon anyway
