Diesel advice please

Never owned a diesel car.. hence the lack of knowledge

Toying with the idea of buying a Yeti..yes I know..stupid name for a car but after a few test drives and read ups on reviews etc...it sounds the business.

Tried the full range of engines and very impressed with the 2ltr, more for the ooomph it's got rather than the economy, it seems a very nice match for the car.

BUT... I am hearing about these DPM filters and the high number failing due to insufficient use of the car.

I do about 5k miles a year and probably a fair few shortish runs.

What do you think?... is it an issue, big or small and is my usage putting me in the 'at risk' group?

When you say your hearing about dpf's failing are you talking in general or on the yeti? the requirement to have a dpf came in fairly quickly so some manufacturers wherent really ready which explains some early problems which by now should be sorted, a lot of the others who have had problems are people who only do short trips involving low speed driving, dpf equiped cars need a good blast down the dual carriageway every now and then, modern diesel cars are more complicated and more expensive to repair when they go wrong than petrols so unless your doing mega miles (your not by the looks of it) or only plan to keep whilst covered by the warranty i would buy a petrol over a diesel these days

dpf then...thought I may have got that wrong ..I meant as a rule..not Yeti.

Thanks for the info..trouble is the Yeti petrol engines are not up to it really..not the 2 wheel drive anyways...hmmmmm...dilemma time

a friend of mine had a octavia vrs, and the dpf was given trouble putting car into limp mode etc, so he had it removed tigged up and remapped, by a specilist bhp increased by 20-25%

Sounds a good idea but not really a way forward when I would be in a 3 year warranty period...thats if the warranty covers the dpf..need to find that out I suppose

Sounds good... I have googled and can find very little on Skoda failures, they also got the customer satisfaction vote again so suppose that says something...I hope

Wife's fiat has had dpf problems it's blocked once on trip down country for looking at 2cv (had done 400 at motorway speed) it regenerated fine and then 500 miles later of trips to work (4 miles) the light came on saying unable to regenerate due to driving style. Since then have sold my landrover so it's doing lots more and longer distance

hi re dpf,if you are only doing low mileages and short distances all manufacturers suffer with issues,i work with ford and mazda,neighours seat had same issues.after a daily 5 mile commute,now swapped for a non dpf model
beware sales patter and stay clear unless regularly doing dual carriageway runs etc

Seems it all boils down to what we consider low miles/short runs etc.

I do about 150 miles a week, some around town and perhaps one a week of 30 miles at 40 to 70 mph, the latter being the one I would hope would clean it out..some weeks it would travel further and longer.

Starting to do my head in all this...finally found a car I like that suits all purposes, plenty of power, great to drive and this could be a sticking point

Short journeys have always been car killers, on DPF diesels it's just another thing that suffers in such use. Shorts journeys allow oil to become contaminated with fuel, acid, water and other chemicals which then cause internal engine corrosion and premature wear. Transmission oil becomes contaminated with water from condensation which then causes corrosion. Brakes become seized through corrosion, discs and pads wear through corrosion. Alternators fail prematurely because they are always boost charging batteries that never reach full charge. Cars never dry out fully after being wet, this can cause bodywork to corrode prematurely. Exhaust systems rust through very quickly as they never get hot enough to boil off condensation. The list goes on !
If I were only commuting a few miles each way every day I'd do it on a bicycle or walk !
Spending thousands on a car to kill it with that sort of use is mad !

I don't think our lass, 2 grandkids and the dog would be too pleased sitting on the cross bars of a bike...I may just not take that suggestion on board..as good as it is

Beloved has a Roomster seats not good for me & electric windows a pain & expensive repairs, not that good on fuel either, my Doblo van driven hard does 10\12 mpg more

Not with the Yeti there isn't, small engines and underpowered, they only do the 1.8 in 4 wheel drive which I don't want.

Interesting about the Roomster, I think it's basically same vehicle but different shape, have spent hours on owners reviews and difficult to find negative ones.

Dear wife has a 4 month old Octavia estate, 2lit diesel 140bhp. Drives 17miles each way to work, 5days a week. Gets caught up in slow traffic every day. We have never had the DPF light come on. When it does, follow the regeneration process as detailed in the manual, and all will be ok. There is no accumulative problem. Our local Skoda dealer, Pant Waen nr Caernarfon, have only ever had 1 DPF failure.None of their new cars stay unsold for very long

I have a down loaded leaflet from Skoda saying the regeneration process requires constant speed for 10mins at 700rpm!!!! this is lower than idle speed. Ok, I doubt this very much, but I am assured, this process on Skoda requires a lower speed than other VAG vehicles with the same engine.
The Yeti will also do this itself on switch off, you can smell "heat" from below sometimes.

Our local Taxi guy has an Octavia Hatch and never a problem, though he does over 60k a year, nearly all at low speed.


The Yeti is a very fine motor car indeed. The diesel version, especially the 140bhp model is, imo the best. This engine's red line starts at 5500rpm, 16valve motor, and feels like a petrol engine. Much much smoother than the old 1'8tdi pd motor

Our first Octavia, 1.6petrol did 127k with no probs
Our second Octavia, 1'8tdi pd, 130bhp, did 210k since July 04. Replaced injector harness. Cost of harness £48+vat, AA free fit!
My Fabia estate, 1.8tdi pd, bought in OCT 03 with 19k, now has 202k, Injector harness at 193k, cost £63 =vat, AA free fit again!. Now this Fabia has been well hammered since I got it. Would definitely buy another.

A local Ford salesman bought a Yeti 2l 140 diesel for himself! 'Nuff said?

I had a drive of the 1.2 petrol and the 2L diesel, the diesel was amazing, masses of torque and smooth as anything.

The sit up seating was comfortable, great vision and the whole package just felt right, the only problem is...most of the Skoda range have VAT free offers and I suspect after the new reg or the dead period after crimbo the Yeti will get the same...so going to hang on and see what happens

My g/f's brother-in-law has a 1.2 petrol Yeti, he thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread, but then as a professor of microbacteriology at Leics Uni I doubt he spends much time 'on it' when driving
I've been out in it and it seems quick enough to me for a 1.2, even with 4 adults and a teen onboard. Not sure it'd be quicker than my Connect but I bet it uses less fuel
