Dies

OK,

I just wondered if any of guy new where I could get dies from. For panel shaping. ie floor pan. etc is there a site somewhere that I could go to, to purchase. Or is there a way to make the dies.

oh just so you are aware I am restoring an old xj-s V12 5.3L Jaguar

You can buy them from people such as Frost, but to get what you want it would be best to make your own. Seen them made from allsorts, piece of plate screwed to a wood 'handle', railway track, I beam, solid block ground to shape. Anything really.

A friend of mine made some to manufacture post-war Rover cills, he just welded bits of angle & plate together and used an angle grinder a lot.

Perhaps I have not explained my self correctly. I can cut out and bend to fit the shape of the floor pan.

What I was refering to was the pattern. Lets say you have the shape all cut out. So all you have is a flat sheet.

The next bit would actually be shaping the metal with the grooves, reseses in The stamped out bits that actually give the metal its strength.

Hopefully I have attached a picture, So you can see the indentations that I am refering to.

That guy in Thailand who hand-forms them springs to mind, VW bus restoration. Can't remember the link offhand but it's mentioned on here somewhere.

Other way I saw was a guy made a press to do them.
Assuming OEM or repro can't be had, or ones for another vehicle cut/modded to suit etc.

That's what we're saying - basically, make the tools to form the grooves &c from material that comes to hand.

Hard wood or hard plastic can work, or even mdf. I thought you meant dollies to start with. Do you know anyone with a deep throat fly press or a brake press?.

I know someone who used to restored stags, he made all his own new panels. The floor pans were indistinguisable from originals[well they lacked the rusty holes]and were suprisingly simply made.
He drew the floor pan out, including the outlines of the shapes of the ribs. He had a local profile place plasma cut the shape from 6mm steel; The loose bits[the ribs] were screwed to another bit of 6mm stock and he used the bit with holes and the bit with the ribs on as the dies.
The new floor pans were battered[carefully pressed] into shape between the 'dies' on a flypress, worked fantasticly well. He used the same technique for odd ribs that went in flitches or panel ribs.
