We’ve a nice flowering cherry but I’m concerned it’s dying,a few branches have life,can it be saved? @Kram ,calling.

With that much dead, I would say unlikely it will come back as it used to be. Pruning so much dead would also leave it very open to infection.

Is the ground very dry? Very wet?

Its got 3-5% the leaves that it should have and whats there looks in poor shape.


Hard to say, can you get more photos. Anything on the trunk or dead branches that might be fungus?

Can you carefully clear around the trunk, look for fungus and get photos of that too?

the tree needed some good pruning before this....
I was always tought the tree needs airflow thru the middle.......
our important fruit trees are pruned to look like a wine glass....open in the middle.....
any branches that cross, one goes as well as any branch that grows to the center....

there shoulkd be some nice turning wood when dry....
now u have to buy a wood lathe.....

Flowering Cherry trees, don't have a very long life expectancy, ours was about 20 plus years and looked pretty much like yours.
Shame, beautiful blossom.
Fruit bearing last longer.

Neither. Ivy covers everything that it can get hold of. The ivy has been cut back before but without getting the roots out, it will always try to return. Its not easy to get ivy roots out, withojt disturbing a trees roots, tho ivy is typically much nearer the surface.

Ivy can girdle a tree, that is grow around and strangle a limb but that generally takes many years and the ivy will be thick.

If a trees growth is weak, ivy can completely cover it, little growth of the tree will get no sun and starve it that way.

Ivy is a pain in the **** on trees. Just takes over.

Easily stopped tho. Takes a couple minutes to go around even a big tree and cut it all at the bottom - with care, dont want to injure the bark.
A heavily infested tree becomes a pain to climb but I usually strip it all off as I climb up.

Ivy doesn’t harm a tree and it is good for habitat. Downside is its not aesthetically pleasing on the eye and makes surveying a tree virtually impossible. Ok in the middle of a woodland but not acceptable in public places where tree safety inspections are needed.

Ivy doesn’t harm a tree

Depends how you look at it. It eventually both overburdens the limbs, & it covers the leaves, reducing their ability to get enough sunlight. Two harmful attributes which immediately spring to mind.

In my mind, Ivy is creeping death for a tree.
