i have bought an argo sheild Y bottle and fitted an old O2 reg with a weldquip flowmeter on the outlet, seems ok but for some reason when i turn on the gas and wind up the reg to get my 10LPM through the flowmeter it is coming straight through the gun uncontrolled, even when i turn the welder on (thought it might be because welder valve needed power) it still flows through.

am i being retarded or any suggestions please.

ps. had the reg apart to check functionality and all seems ok diaphragm seems to be in good nick and controll pin looks ok...........................

Can you measure the output pressure from the reg?

I don't like the idea of taking a reg to bits! They handle a lot of pressure.

Why on earth did you dismantle the regulator?
If the gas is coming straight out of the torch then the problem has to be with the machine!
The fact that you've been able to set the flowmeter to 10lpm means the regulator is doing it's job so you shouldn't have messed with it.
Would be very useful if you told us what machine it is.

don't panic boys. i have been work on hp (400bar) breathing air for subsea life support systems for nearly 25years, a little more complicated than this valve....but thanks for your concern. initially i could not get the adjusting handwheel to adjust the pressure, turns out the threaded adjuster was turning the bushing rather than turning itself, last person to use turned it to far out and jammed it against the bushing

is the gas valve in the welder torch or the main body...

if it has a blue clarke hobby torch it will be on the torch handle under plastic cover

thanks danny, as i was writing it figured must be in the handle as you would have a delay on gas delivery to welding tip , albeit a short one

Take the valve apart, polish all the bits up with a WD40 soaked rag and reassemble it, that should sort it.
