Ive been doing some meddling with car climate panel transistor packs. Had a Rover 75 V8 one knocking about, and prompted by some discussion on a discovery forum, rolled up my sleeves and had a go at that, followed by a discovery unit. They are basically a transistor power driver for the fan motor. Early ones (discovery 1) use a power darlington transistor, and discovery 2 and the rovers use a power mosfet. Also they have a thermal fuse inside. symptoms of failure are either no fan, or full fan irrespective of blower setting.
So Ive done the rover one, and a discovery one for a customer, with upgrades (thermal paste on transistor and painted casting to help with heat transfer
