Have raised some eyebrows a the home improvement stores.
Loaded 10 bags of concrete in my Mustang (900 lbs). Suspension hardly moved. The only time I ever drove the car that it rode smooth
I always love those driving down the highway with a mattress strapped on top of their car using twine and also holding it out the window.
On the morning news traffic report there is always a mattress or ladder somewhere on the beltway.

seen a sofa on top of a car not so long back with the three passengers handing on to what was left of the bungy rope that was holding it on and that was down the M6! i collected a landy chassis thew other week and the blokes were supprised when i got the bucket of big ratchet straps out of the van and the length of timber to sit it on so that the trailer didn't eat the galv off. it seams that most people that collect them self bring a trailer that's to small and no straps!
I only use the big 5 ton ones now have broken to many of the little ones

I used to drive a 7.5 tonne lorry for a local timbermerchant.
Some numpty ordered a shint new lorry with a 6m bed.
great everyone thought can tke a big load, until i weighed it at the local vosa station and found it weighed over 4 tonnes unladed.
This meant it could only carry just over 3 tonnes cargo.
a pallet of plaster board is nearly 2 tonnes so i could only carry one.
refused to take several load out on the road for being overweight.
also the tail board was very low and being a long overhang from the rear axle meant that it kept hitting the ground it turn this would take out the rear lights!!!!this was defo not the bes vehicle to drive round highland Perthshire!!!!

Working as a fleet engineer a few years ago I was asked to procure a new vehicle to mount specialist equipment for road repair. I was given a list of the required equipment and was told the vehicle had to have a gross weight of no more than 7.5t due to a shortage of HGV drivers.
Adding up the weight of the equipment and allowing some carrying capacity for materials, the vehicle was finally ordered as ... an 18 tonner!!!!

He was from Huddersfield, he wouldn't understand.
I once sold an appallingly built roof rack, I acquired with a Defender, I sold it for £250
. and I was more than honest with the description,
. Duly this guy rolls up to collect it in a Brand new County
. and proceeds to fit it to the roof. I couldn't believe my eyes. After spending 24k+ he was sticking a badly welded conduit roof rack on it. Beggars belief.
Another story, when I was shop fitting, the boss loaded a Transit with 20 5 ltr tins of paint, and around 15 sheets of 3/4 ply. 3 men in the front and 2 in the back sat on the tins. Got halfway to the job in Newcastle and the Police pulled him over, told him he would have to get the van recovered, or move some of the gear into another van. He kicked out all but 2 of the men, and 4sheets of ply, leaving the rest at the side of the A1 to wait for another van

My best effort , was collecting a 8x4 ' sheet of osb
Only had one ratchet strap , so put it over the middle roofbar of three ..
was ok until 40 mph .... you may guess wot happened next
yep the wind gets under the front of the sheet rips it in half and goes flying over onto the road behind
luckily nothing following me
