Got rather a large quantity of Ardrox 1900d up for grabs which is basically aircraft tfr. That may do well in a parts washer, cant see them using it on aircraft it it were to attack ali.

After reading this, I popped into Screwfix & bought some as I only have about a litre left. I hope it’s just a supply problem, not discontinuing it as it’s really good cleaner.

Edit, just looked at Screwfix site & showing as clearance, delved a bit deeper & it’s shown as made by Zep on the cosh sheet & there is a new line marketed by Zep further down the page that looks the same, dearer though by several £pounds

I was watching someone recently on you tube, he used sealed containers to put the parts in, just big enough to house the part, then filled the container up with degreaser and put that in the ultrasonic cleaner filled with water, uses much less degreaser and doesn’t contaminate the machine, it appeared to work very well.
Depends on the size of the part you’re cleaning I suppose, with a large part it’s probably not worth the hassle.

I have heard this before. Such a faff when I can just whack everything in and then just take it out and rinse it off. When it’s really bad I just drain it into a bucket and dispose of it

I use a parts washer "machine" which as we know is just a big metal tub on a stand with a recirculating pump. I part all parts through this first and re use the water based detergent I use for months before changing it. Mine is a floor standing one like this:



If I am feeling the need I can also drop an immersion heater, not HSE approved into the tank for an hour or so before cleaning parts which makes the water warm and cleaning action somewhat increased.

All parts go through this first step to clean them.

After that my ultrasonic cleaners can do the finer work. Their ultrasonic bath solution therefore does not get heavily soiled and as such stays in the tank for re -use several times. Indeed most of the time now I just use hot water and a shot of fairy liquid to give already washed bolts a final go.

Hope this makes sense but this is my strategy to get the most use out of the cleaning solutions I have and it works very well.

Indeed alot of parts don't go any further than the parts washer tank as it is pretty good when used properly.

As an example my S600 V12 valve covers got cleaned in my parts washer.

I did not want to use any flammable solvent or kerosene etc in it as it would be a liability in my garage as the parts washer lives right at my main workbench where I weld etc.

Besides that, the water based degreaser is perfectly fine for greasy classic engine parts, transmission and diff parts etc. It does take alot of crap and this does not affect the performance of it but I do change the fluid annually or so.

Absolutely, fair point, I only mentioned it in case you didn’t want to use so much degreaser.

I have the same sort of unit, used to be red until Jizer gradually removed most of the paint! I think I paid £27 from an Ebay seller in Tyneside; they forgot to charge me carriage (back in about 2004 so I reckon they've probably let me off with it). Effectively the same as Machine Mart sold for about 3x the cost at the time.

You can get 'proper' immersion heater 'pokers' which are used for heating the developer/ fixer tanks used for processing x-ray films - not cheap, though I've seen used ones on Ebay.

Thanks for the heads up, I have used a few tubs of this product over the years, always found it good. Just reserved the last one in my area on click and collect now.
I think it could be being discontinued as it is phosphates based which is not great for the environment (marine life).

Looks as if there’s a replacement though- at 11.99 - still branded as NO nonsense. Maybe not as good?
