Deep sea welder??

My son (16) wants to study welding and then do his deep sea diving course. All with a view to working as a deep sea welder on the rigs around the world.

Has anyone actually done anything like this and can offer any pointers and tips?

Personally I would point him in the direction of training to be an ROV pilot, many skills are required, electrical, electronics, hydraulics ect ect ect..........

A good industry for anyone to get into, not just the yung uns, plus you stay warm working from a heated cabin, no risk of the bends, plus to get offshore as a diver with welding tickets means working up from civils doing crappy work, sometimes for less money than a shelf packer, till the diver accrues enough underwater time and skills to move forward to Sat training. My thoughts only!!

pm, me if you want, i was a commercial diver for 9 yrs, although not specifically as a welder.

I might be able to help/ put off hahahahahaha. There is a lot of money to be made by divers who are in 'the clique', its very hard to get in the clique tho. I was lucky i was employed by a company.

The downside is that there are a lot of unemployed divers, its a very risky occupation, the shelf life of a commercial diver isnt long, and there are a lot of very low paid divers out there.

I agree with Runnach, go for the ROV.

Lincoln do a mig that is waterproof down to 50fsw!!
