Decanting Thinners

Is there a spout or something that you can get to attach to the 5ltr tins of thinners? I just can't seem to pour a bit out without covering everything in thinners..... or is there a knack to it

depends what you're pouring in to.

Often it works well to turn the tin round so the hole is on the side, or at the top, not the bottom, as you pour.

Keeping the pouring hole high stops 'glugging' from trapped air.

Try using a piece of tube as a pipette. It works well for small quantities.

Just pouring into a beaker or jug to mix with a bit of paint, yup, it's the glugging that does it easy enough to control when the tin gets a bit emptier but a real swine when it's new!

tube as a pipette sounds like and idea, as does the turkey baster! Tried the syringe method and it ******** up the rubber seal on it and mate it hard to pluge..... will have a play tomorrow using your suggestions, thanks

Do what Luke says. There was a guy on Dragon's Den who invented an anti-glug device. His face was a picture when one of the dragons turned the can round and poured the liquid out without spilling a drop.

Thinners will melt it.
Gun wash seems to be worse - it soon makes a mess of latex gloves.

Getting a gun of paint of a new 25ltr drum, that normally makes a mess, a washed out plastic coffee cup works a treat, they melt after a few mins, just long enough to fuill a pot up
Anyone got any ideas on that?

I use a steel funnel to fill empty a 25L into 5L tins.
If you spill any its soon gone!

You can get taps for 5 litre drums, you'll probably need a brass one with a seal that isn't affected by the thinners.
Use vinyl gloves Paul - marigolds industrial (not the latex ones!) or Arco sell them OR get yerself some of that wonderful Dermashield I was spouting about in another thread.

Here's a cheap tap and even cheaper here. I wouldn't recommend those cheap plastic syphon pumps, they're a pita imho.
You may have to drill/cut a hole in the lid of the can to fit it but once done you can keep the lid assembly and screw it to the next can.

The worst can for decanting I've ever come across is a 25litre acetone can with a 3" lid. Almost impossible to decant without sloshing until it's virtually empty. I hate badly designed containers

You may get away with a cheap plastic water barrel tap, available from any garden centre, but may need to replace the rubber seal with something solvent proof. Not sure how well they seal once off so maybe a spare lid to close the can after you've decanted would be the way to go.
