Dealing with a deep scratch

Met a "traveler" in a Transit in a narrow lane who scratched my car and kept on traveling.

The scratch has bent in the panel about 1mm over the length of the door. I was quoted £450 +VAT for repair, which is half the value of my CRV so I thought I would have a go myself. Is there a one-stop shop where I can get filler, primer and paint? It would have to be a spray can job if possible, although I have a compressor and would get a spray gun if it would do a better job.

motor factors will have everything you need.

give them your colour code and they will mix a can. will need clear too.

sand paper, filler, hardener (normally included but not always so check as some people like to nick it) primer, masking tape. and somewhere dry and away form the elements preferably to paint it in. nothing worse than spraying a panel and being fairly happy with it, then returning after 20 mins to find it has a blade of grass stuck to it

id have a good look round for a clean used door , as repairing that you will need to paint the ajoining panels to get a good match

I'd try hard to source another door. Even with the better nozzles fitted to professional spray cans, on an area that large it's difficult to get an even metallic finish.

X3. that kind of job would probably put you off bodywork for life. Lots of things to learn all at once.

How about a coach line tape along the car, can get some professional tapes these days, from single to triple lined that look really good.

I would agree with Steve & Norsa, thats a hard job to learn on, getting another door to match would be another big problem.
If you do decide to have a go DON'T go to a motor factors, go to a paint factors where the help & advice should be correct.

Have you thought about one of the smart repairs for this they do get a bad name but it really depends on the skill of the repairer. It may not be perfect but would be a lot better than a rattle can job.

I take it you have had bad experiences with motor factors then langy?

I personally have never had problems with the 2 I use. always give good quality paints with a good match on colour. the clear isn't always perfect but its usually off the shelf stuff so cant really moan about that.

i get most of my paint online now but it is all 2k, and im assuming there isn't a prepared spray booth waiting for this repair

Motor factors sell parts, paint factors sell painting materials, I know where I would go for paint stuff.

Thanks for the advice guys. Think I will look around for a spare door. Lots of CRVs being broken but no silver ones just now.

well the 2 motor factors local to me both mix and sell 2k and celly paints, both in gallon cans and in aerosol

never had an issue, although as I say, I get most of mine from internet suppliers now as its cheaper

I have found aerosol clear very difficult to apply as its very thin so needs loads of light coats and its difficult for me to avoid runs but then I am not experienced in painting but since changing to a touch up gun and proper clear coat have gained far more confidence.
