An elderly friend has just messaged me:

"I was watching and the picture disappeared after a few min the sound went as well seems there is a short pulling the psu down it tries switching on then off then on it seems the psu is overloaded"

Any ideas? I've heard LG don't give very good after sales service. This is anyway out of guarantee.

They're still on sale (£500.00), so parts should be available, but by the time you're had it inspected/repaired/plus parts. It's probably cheaper to buy a new one.

Look for dry joints around connectors and any transistor like components on the power supply. It could also be the large capacitors. Beware the capacitors will hold a charge if the discharge bleed resistors have gone o/c. An o/c resistor can also cause the power supply to fail to start.

Take a look under the model number on ebay for a psu rebuild kit. That will tell you what is likly to have failed !

At 12 years old you would need to decide whether it was worth repairing. A newer TV would have the itvx and other apps on it for catch up etc whereas something this age would probably not have itv catchup any more

If you know what you are doing then replacing the caps may be cost effective. If you have to pay someone to do it then not so cost effective

I really don’t think it’s worth buying a new tv for itvx….(maybe for other apps…but then a Roku streamer is much cheaper…) it’s absolute ****e! The app is hopeless… nowhere near as good as the Ch4 app…

But this doesn’t fix the tv….a cheaper alternative is a second hand working one…
