Dead 110v transformer

Need to pick someones knowledge regarding this, yesterday whilst using my abrasive cut off saw I managed to somehow fry my 110 box.
I have took the lid off to have a nosey at what could be wrong and where the 240v cable comes into the box there is a thingymabob that looks like a squashed toffee with 2 solid wires either side, it used to look like toffee too, same colour! but now looks like charcoal.
I tried asking at maplins if they had any idea what value this capacitor / resistor / toffee thing but they need the numbers off the side of it to find out what it is, kinda difficult as any ink on it has now been destroyed and turned into soot.
Would any of you good people who know about electrickery know what i need to ask for at maplins?

Also on a Clarke 90en, where does the long brown wire go to once it has come through into the gubbins side of the machine?
My son thought it a great idea to take the torch off and try to fit it to his sealey machine but it wouldn't fit! If I get chance i will try to take some pics later when i get home to shed some light on what i mean.

sounds live a thermial fuse to me. the long wire on the mig is probily the switch wire one needs to go to + on the bridge rectufyer and the other to the control board

Thanks for that MK, it looks something similar to that in the link, but more round, like a quality st toffee. It is placed between the live and the trip button in the box.
As for the wtorch wires, IIRC there are 2 brown wires, one with a spade connector which went to the board(that was the only place with another spade connector to fit it) and another brown wire with another connector that i think went to somewhere in the middle?
Will take some pics later to show, kinda difficult to explain lol

Hello Mike,

I can't imagine any reason for a capacitor or resistor on a basic 240 \ 110v site transformer, if that's what you are talking about? Could it be a terminal block; you've nothing to lose by investigating further?

Hi Alec, it does look like one of those things in the link that MK posted, just more round instead of square.
I have seen smaller ones on most circuit boards (much smaller)

if you have a trip in the box as well i would do away with it. the other thing it could be is a powerfactor correcting capacitor like on fluro lights but that would connect across L and N

Maybe cost you more to repair than buy a new/second hand one? We are great at frying them, ours are newish ones that are full of resin inside - nothing to get to to repair!

if the winding are dead then definatly a skip job

It's probably a varistor (spike suppression component).

Snip it out, it should still work
