I have recently got our plate rolls running. The top pyramid roll is moved up and down via an three phase motor with forward and reverse but tends to over run making it hard to position accurately or repeatably.
I think there are two options.
Either a VFD with an add on braking resistor or a DC injecton brake.
I like the vfd option because the speed could be reduced and a jog button implemented. The downside is this is a motor from 1954, so I doubt it will particularly enjoy being run on a vfd.
DC injection brakes seem to be real good money! I assume the units/modules that look like a Contactor handle the DC voltage which must be supplied from a transformer?
