I wonder why my engine sounds a bit bottom endish??

Probably because most of the bottom end is attached to the oil pump pickup!

It's carbon, thankfully there isn't any sparkly stuff in the sump - just lumps of carbon.
I'll find out what the crank looks like tomorrow.

Once had something similar with a Corsa diesel (isuzu engine) the paint came off the inside of the sump & blocked the suction filter.
Always try to change my oil/filter before service period for that very reason. My new disco has a very long service period but it’ll be getting serviced long before recommended time.

This is from 2x injector tip seals failing and an idiot (me) thinking that the tapping from the top end when I bought it was a loose tappet, top end strip found the source of the noise, unfortunately once I sorted it out I could then hear a much nastier noise from the bottom. Suddenly my cheap runabout isn't looking so cheap!

Happily the crank isn't too bad at all so it's getting a good clean out and a fresh set of bearings and bolts, it's only No1 that's failed the rest just looked normal for a middle-aged engine.
