Cypriot Landrover Chassis Repairs!

Just back from a holiday in Paphos, Cyprus. Took a drive up to Adonis Falls and saw this nice old Series 3 Landy.:

On closer inspection of the rear cross member saw some unusual weld repairs!

I fabricated a rear cross-member from RSJ, channel and angle iron on mine, nearly weighed as much as the rest of the chassis.

If the bonnet and door & window hinges are original, that's a 2a...

Those Cyprus Land rovers are a joy to see, a lot are Ex MOD.
Back in the late 80's in Kenia there was a lot old Land Rovers still going with some real Heath Robinson repairs.

IIa hinges, III wings, grille & front panel. Military bonnet and bumper, civvy rear X-member with Military hook, trailer sockets & bumperettes. A bit of hotch-potch.

I have a cousin who lives in Cyprus and owns a SII (& 200TDi 90) . It's ex military and chassis is 100% rust free so suspect this has been abused with heavy towing to need crossmember repairs rather than rot like we get here.

I've owned two S8's over the years - first one when I was a teenager in the 1960's, last one was a male menopause event total rebuild to factory finish (or better) and was sold nine years ago to pay for eldest daughters wedding

Not a bike I have ever ridden, thought the worm drive was a weak point?

Designed as a tourer with a side car. There were two different rear axle ratios. Many lost the side car and kept the wrong axle ratio. It was a bronze worm and if kept properly oiled it was fine but some used to use the wrong EP oils which attacked the bronze. Stewart Engineering had gear sets made (Originally Bective Road Putney but moved to the Midlands when the Stewarts sold the business to the chap that made parts for them). Mrs Stewart had long flowing blonde hair and was quite a sight on a bike - she must have been in her late 50's then !

Series one rear cross member. The bottom of the member on series 2 etc are squared. Also the bumperettes dont suit the cross member, it should be the military version that is rectangular - doesn't have the tapers on the ends.

It looks like the curved section at the bottom on the right has been messed (plated) with but the curve on the left is series one.

It might be a hotch-potch but it's keeping it on the road so someone can one day take pity on it and hopefully give it a full restoration. I know I cursed whoever it was that had done bodge repairs to my jeep before I owned it, but at least they had kept it out of the scrapyard so I could eventually restore it back to it's original state.

I don't have a problem with it being a random amalgamation of disparate parts - it's what built the history of that machine.

I don't have a problem with it either, when I restore a vehicle I fix it so each part is in as good as new condition regardless of whether or not it's original spec. My jeep is a mix of Ford and Willys but like you say that is part of it's history, for all I know it may have had that "wrong" part fitted in a field in France in 1944... I like to think so

With classic car restoration I like to see them restored to factory original but with common sense used. I don't really go for polished wheelnuts. I've know owners refuse to to fit flashing indicators because they're not original which IMHO makes them unsafe to drive on the road. Modifications should be easily reversible for the showground.

Landrovers and suchlike are a special case, they were designed to be modified and adapted and there are so many of them nothing is lost by modifying them.
