cylinder for hydraulic press

going to make myself a press to help with Landy maintenance! What to you chaps think of this cylinder?

That looks exactly the same as the cylinder in my press. The whole press inc cylinder ect cost me less than that from axminster

I didn't realise they had gone up so much!
I think I've had mine about 3 years now

just had a look, they're around the same price a everyone else. I can get the steel from work as offcuts and thought I try to build one myself to keep cost down. But hydraulic rams are insane money. Been lookin for a second hand one but no luck yet.

I fancy machining a ram... from scratch, anyone done it?

It'd be worth trying any truck,plant or agricultural breakers. Any of them should have something to suit you.

Other option I'm looking at, is a bottle jack, seen a few DIY pressbrakes made with 20/30/50 tonne bottle jacks

That might be the cheapest way to go Mr fuzzy. Think 30 ton bottle jack is around £100.

If you can get yourself to a farm auction hydraulic rams are cheap as chips.
Last one I went to an assortment of about 6 hydraulic cylinders of various sizes, some single action, some double action made £30.
I bought a 4" double action ram, spool valve and assorted hoses for a log splitter project for £40.
