Cyclone Collection Vessel

I've got myself one of those cyclone things that you bolt on top of a container with the aim of not rapidly clogging the filter on my work vac (Earlex combivac) when I'm sanding paint and filler on walls when decorating. I'm unsure what to use as a catch vessel, I think it needs to be metal or at least strong plastic to resist bending in? Also needs to have a good seal with the lid. What do people recommend? I've seen pictures of some kind of large tins or plastic barrels where the lid has a kind of round clamping ring, what are they called?

'latch top barrel' in google finds many examples. I am very sure that is not the correct name, but it works for searching.

Some people fit a pressure (vacuum) relief valve ot stop the barrel collapsing. Others fit reinforcing hoops inside the barrel. Closed cell foam (yoga mat) can be used for the porpoise of a seal.

They only collapse in if you block the suction in, but usually pop back out.

I squeezed in a plywood disc with a hole in the middle.
My plastic drum was a sod to get back into shape after it collapsed. Had to use a jack inside the drum.

Ive used 30ltr blue plastic things before, and theyve been fine.

I tried a 60ltr one once, and that just crushed in on itself.

This is with a henry.

I use a black 25L UN container with metal band/rubber seal lid from H&O Plastics.

I tried the small plastic barrel and it collapsed the first time I used it.

I had one of those useless Lidl ash vacs and stripped off the motor and blocked the hose connection.
Mounted my cyclone where the vac motor was and I now have a great tank that doesn't collapse!

The bottom of a knackered henry would work too.

Today I broke my cyclone extractor.

I'm doing a bit of decorating and using my cyclone to sift out some of the sanding dust before it goes into the central vacuum system I installed probably 20 years ago.

Vacuum always worked fine but I decided to wash the filter for the first time ever when I emptied it a couple of days ago.

Definitely more suck and very little dust from the Mirka sanding block, but I wasn't expecting a reinaction of the Titan Submersible incident.

Need to look for a better pressure vessel.

The cyclone is up and running again.
I had a spare tub from one of the Lidl ash collectors that were so rubbish I don't know why I bought two, but at least I had a spare.

To prevent this one imploding, I rolled a ring out of 25 x 5 flat bar and hammered into the center of the tub.
It's a tight fit so I didn't fix it in place but just welded the ends of the ring together.
I also pop rivetted a plate over the original inlet.

We will see if this is man enough for the job.

I must say it is handy having a ring roller for the few times you need it.

From my sketchy physics and maths from 55 years ago.
If 16 inches diameter, 20 inches tall then the surface area, excluding top and bottom, is about 1000 square inches.
Atmospheric pressure is about 15psi.
If Henry reduces the pressure by 2psi, there will be 2 pounds of pressure per square inch. With 1000 inches to press upon, it's no wonder it collapses.

The above could quite simply be wrong.

This resolves the issue completely , If you have a 3D printer lots of them quite easy to print on thingyverse

I use a plastic tub. Lid reinforced with ply, and the walls of a similar tub (top and bottom cut off) wedged inside to stop it collapsing. It was intended as a stop-gap, but that was about 10 years ago!

Dreading the day that the Earlex pops its clogs - it must have run hundreds and hundreds of hours.

The men's shed extractor I set up also has a clear glass witness bulb that shows even the finest of particles before the bin is full & need emptying .

I got hold of a very heavy plastic dustbin with a conical shape un-ribbed sides like a big flower pot , .Used the extension arms to my routers guide bracket to make a big radius cutter screwed to the middle of th board.and after gluing & screwing two 3foot x 3foot 19mm pieces of construction ply together used the router to cut out a disc two inches bigger than the rim of the bin, . Cleaned the lip of lid with a light sanding , gave it a thick bead of toilet silicon where it would be resting on the bin rim then covered the bin rim in cling film put the lid on & left it to cure with four brick on it for three days .


Used a trepanner to cut the cyclone access hole and reinforced it with a split half rings once located on the lid, made some simple guide lugs so the lifd can only be fitted in one position .

IMO ...
The conical shape of the bin in to above picture is better than a straight side steel barrel with or without reinforcing ribs or an ovalid in height blue plastic ex food barrel barrel .
Remember that it's best to have a bin/barrel that can be picked up when full and taken to where it will be quickly and easily decanted/emptied .
