cycle bike with engine!!!

well, heres my latest project, i basically used a mini dirt bike chain, gearbox, and sprockets and adapted them to a honda power float engine, then made a frame for the engine to sit on, - also, i just bolted the dirt bike sprocket onto the spokes with big washers!, had a shot yesterday and it does about 30mph!

A neighbour of mine has fitted a wiper motor to a folding bike. It keeps going backwards and forwards, but at least it can park itself!

I have built a few of these. only used a spindle which sat on the tyre and drove it. always wanted to do a chain driven one as the load of the tyre against the spindle seemed to chew out the front bearings on the motor of the first 1 or 2. on my last one (38cc 2stroke) the crank snapped . always rode them pretty hard tho. hmmm? i still got a 160cc 2 stroke motor in the shed.

So i take it theyre not legal there aswel?. Here they ARE legal ONLY if it still has the pedals etc. as it can still be classified as a bike.

Really? Even the ones here with teeny tiny electric motors to help old grannies up hills are classed as a powered vehicle and therefore require a number plate, tax, licence etc. That is if it is to be used on public roads. (wow I managed to get 6 two letter words in a row!)

Used to sell those electric bikes, and beleive it or not, they DON'T need a helmet, licence, insurance, tax or number plates by law.

Bit worrying really, as the decent ones would do upwards of 20 mph before you even helped them out by pedaling.

We had one 'played with', and with a speedo on it, managed to get it up to 37mph!!!

My legs were goin like mad though!!!!

The electric bikes your talking about only need tax, insurance etc if they can hit a certain speed, which there not going to. However, there is a guy round this way (i feel mildy eccentric) has one of the mobilty scooter things, has it on a Q plate, utterly ridiculas, he drives/rides it on the road, just slowly crawling along, holding the traffic up. I`d imagine anyone in the guildford area would have seen him.

What are the UK regs for these things? I've got an elderly Raleigh moped - petrol, 1970ish and 50cc maybe, but it has pedals and the thing doesn't go more than 20mph. Accepted route is to register the thing as a moped and do the tax and insurance thing - are there loopholes in the UK?

Is it one of these?, this is a a Raleigh Runabout, 49cc 2 stroke with a centrifugal clutch, pedal to start, decompress to stop
I had one in the 70s, when I drove up the road the neighbors thought it was a ww2 buzz bomb and used to look up in the air!. It is a motor bike and needs tax MOT etc.

When my dad was younger (many years ago now as he's now 69) he overtook a MG going down a very long hill. He was doing well over 50mph... no helmet either!
