Cutting up a old diesel tank

I have just replace my oil tank, there is far too much good material on the old one to just send it down the scrap yard.
After reading all the horror stories about welding fuel tanks, I wondered if anyone has any suggestions as to the best way to safely cut up an old diesel tank. I have washed it out a couple of times but it still stinks of diesel. I had intended to cut it up using a makita nibbler? Does anyone have any better suggestions?

Printcom, I take it you're talking about a bulk storage tank, like a central heating tank?

I cut one up with an air nibbler. It was a decent thickness too.

I have cut a few large rectangular ones up with a 9" grinder and the residue left in the tank does tend to catch fire

The most safe way to make something like this 'inert' is to steam clean the inside out the tank and vent it/ dry it and have it 'certified' as safe...
