cutting pipe

While looking at a gate the other day I was just thinking to myself wouldn't it be great to have a thingy that cuts
round pipe so that it fits onto another round pipe so you can just weld away. When I realised that I had no idea what sort of machine or tool those this job
any help would be appreciated by this old fool

Tube notcher? I think Frost do one.

Make youself a jig and use a hole saw (in a pilar drill) of the same diameter as the pipe you want to fit it against to cut the end of the pipe.

On the 'is born' series with Mark whathisname they notched pipe by holding it against the end of a bench belt sander. The machine he used had various sized end rollers that you could swap over so that you could do different sized pipes. I don't think this was an intentional design element of the sander but seemed to work OK and was pretty quick using 36 grit paper.

Another way of joining two tubes is to just cut the end of one tube square and then flatten the end and weld it against the other. Seen a lot on gates. Looks tidy, and is a quick method of jointing.

That's what I usually do paul I was just wondering how they cut the pipe I will pick up a set of hole saws during the week and see if I can come up with a jig for the drill the table on my drill doesn't tilt does that mean I'm stuck with 90°

Your table might not tilt but the jig could, and so could the pipe! (of course you might have to dig a big hole in the ground for a long end to fit into

You can get tilting drill vices

It might be easier cut a hole in the roof as some of the pipes I would be using are 20 foot log and I don't fancy falling into 20 foot hole. Most of the long pipes would-be 90°
but ill see if I can get a tilting vice would do vice do to hold the pipe instead of the jig

I make cattle and sheep gates I also make some cattle and sheep railings I also make feed barriers for cattle

as paul says get your self a tube notcher or make 1 easy enough

I really wouldnt bother notching tubes - flatten the ends and weld them - its not worth the hassle

Make life even easier and use a fly press to flatten the ends ( a norton no 4 would do it nicely)

the angle cuts I would be doing would be for the sloped bars in the centre of the feed barriers if you cut them with the chopsaw and flattened with a hammer you have to grind off the heel again to get them to fit which is a bit of a nuisance. I presume I can get the 3 in. hole saw

yeah you can get a 3" hole saw no problem would be better to do them in a drill press.Though as they tend to snatch when they make contact just clamp the tube to the bed and tilt it to the angle you’re after

I use the press with a 45 degree cutter on the back which presses and cuts the tube in one operation. If you just bash the ends flat with a hammer it looks crap!

Depend on how big of pipe you are using, on the web there is a miter program for grinding out a notch (fishmouth).

I do most of my tube notching on the bandsaw, i cant remember the exact angle, think its about 67degrees, just before the centreline, rotate then cut again.
A very quick flip round with a 5" grinder and its pretty good.

Got a couple of nothers to fit in the Kingsland (punch head), seen them Paul?
